A mother gives birth to a 7-pound baby. Every 3 months, the baby gains 2 pounds. If x is the age of the baby in months, then y is the weight of the baby in pounds. Find an equation of a line in the form y=mx+b that describes the baby's weight.

y =___________________

Answers

Answer:

y = 2/3 x + 7

Step-by-step explanation:

At birth represents the beginning of time for the baby. Lets call this month zero. So here are your coordinates.

x = 0 y = 7 ----> at birth

x = 3 y = 9

x = 6 y = 11

x = 9 y = 13

Now we find the slope between each point. Since the common difference of y is 2 and the common difference in x is 3 , the slope will be

slope = y / x = 2 / 3

Therefore, the equation of the line that represents this relationship is

y = (2/3) x + 7

On a team, 7 girls and 6 boys scored a total of 79 points. The difference between the number of points scored by the 7 girls and the number of points scored by the 6 boys is 19. Each girl scored the
same number of points and each boy scored the same number of points. Find the number of points scored by each girl and each boy.

Answers

Each girl scored 9 points

Each boy scored 7 points

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the number of points each girl scored = a

Let the number of points each boy scored = b

7 girls and 6 boys scored a total of 105 points.

7a + 6b = 105......... Equation 1

The difference between the number of points scored by the 7 girls and the number of points scored by the 6 boys is 21

7a - 6b = 21........... Equation 2

7a + 6b = 105......... Equation 1

7a - 6b = 21........... Equation 2

Subtract Equation 2 from Equation 1

12b = 84

b = 84/12

b = 7

Therefore, each boy scored 7 points

7a + 6b = 105......... Equation 1

b = 7

7a+ 6b = 105

7a + 6(7) = 105

7a + 42 = 105

7a = 105 - 42

7a = 63

a = 63/7

a = 9

Therefore, each girl scored 9 points.

The distance between the centres of two villages is 8 km.
A map on which they are shown has a scale of 1:50000.
Calculate the distance between the centres of the two villages on the map. Give your answer in centimetres.

Answers

The distance between the centres of the two villages on the map is 16cm. The solution is obtained using the concept of unit conversion.

What is unit conversion?

The same attribute is expressed using a unit conversion, but in a different unit of measurement. For instance, time can be expressed in minutes rather than hours, and distance can be expressed in kilometres, feet, or any other measurement unit instead of miles. Measurements are frequently offered in one set of units, like feet, but are required in another set, like chains.

Now, we are given the scale of a map as 1 : 50000 and that two villages are 8km apart on the map.

The scale of a map is given as 1 : 50000.

=> 1  cm on map  = 50,000 cm  on actual

We know that 1 km = 1,00,000cm

So,

=> 8km  = 8,00,000 cm

So, The distance on the map is

800000 / 50000

= 80/5

= 16 cm

Hence, the actual distance between them is 16cm.

Which account earned you the most interest in the first year?This means that Account A earned 12.00 in 1 year, while Account B only earned 9.00 in the same time period.The account that earned you the most interest in the first year depends on the interest rate for each individual account.To find out which account earned you the most in the first year, we can use the equation A = P(1+r/n)^nt. In this equation, A stands for the amount of money in the account, P stands for the principal amount, r stands for the interest rate, n stands for the number of times the interest is compounded per year, and t stands for the number of years. For account A, plugging in the numbers given, we get A = P(1+12/18)^18. In this equation, P represents the principal amount in account A after the first year.For account B, plugging in the numbers given, we get A = P(1+27/27)^27. In this equation, P represents the principal amount in account B after the first year. By comparing the two equations, we can determine which account earned you the most interest in the first year.If we compare the two equations, we find that account B earned you more interest than account A in the first year because the interest rate for account B was higher than the interest rate for account A. f(x) = √(x + 7), g(x) = √(x - 7)
Find the domain of f.

Answers

Answer:

[tex]x\ge -7[/tex]

Step-by-step explanation:

Square Root Function:

The square root function has a domain consisting of numbers greater than or equal to zero. This excludes negative numbers since the square root of a number, when multiplied by the same square root of a number results in the original number: [tex]y=\sqrt{x}\implies y*y=x[/tex]. If we wanted the square root of a negative number, we would need a number which multiplies by it self to get a negative number, but as you may recall, if we square a real number, we always get a positive. So negative numbers are not included in the domain (although there are imaginary solutions)

So we just need the inside of the square root to be greater than or equal to zero. Thus we can derive: [tex]x+7\ge 0[/tex] and then just subtract 7 from both sides to simplify: [tex]x\ge -7[/tex] and now we have our domain in interval notation.

Suppose a parabola has an axis of symmetry at x = 6, a maximum height of 6 and also passes through the point (7, 5). Write the equation of the parabola in vertex form.

Answers

The equation of the parabola, in vertex-form, is given as follows:

y = -(x - 6)² + 6.

What is the equation of a parabola given it’s vertex?

The equation of a quadratic function, of vertex (h,k), is given by the rule presented as follows:

y = a(x - h)² + k

In which the parameters of the equation are given as follows:

h is the x-coordinate of the vertex.k is the y-coordinate of the vertex.a is the leading coefficient.

The axis of symmetry is at x = 6, hence:

h = 6.

The maximum height if of 6, hence:

k = 6.

Thus:

y = a(x - 6)² + 6.

The parabola passes through the point (7,5), meaning that when x = 7, y = 5, and thus the leading coefficient a is obtained as follows:

5 = a(7 - 6)² + 6.

a = -1.

Hence the parabola is defined as follows:

y = -(x - 6)² + 6.

A squad of 14 players is selected for a mixed football tournament.
The rules state that the ratio of boys to girls per squad must be no greater than 3:2
What is the maximum number of boys that can be selected for the squad?

Answers

Answer:

Step-by-step explanation:

The ratio of boys to girls in the squad must be no greater than 3:2. This means that for every 3 boys, there must be at least 2 girls.

Since the total number of players in the squad is 14, we can set up the following equation:

3x + 2y = 14

Where x is the number of boys in the squad, and y is the number of girls in the squad.

To find the maximum number of boys that can be selected for the squad, we need to find the highest possible value of x while still satisfying the equation.

We know that x, the number of boys, is a whole number, so we can start testing values of x by subtracting 2 from both sides and then dividing by 3

x = (14 - 2y)/3

If we start testing values for y and substituting it back into the equation, we'll find that the maximum value for y is 6, and the corresponding value for x is 5.

35 + 26 = 15 = 14

Therefore, the maximum number of boys that can be selected for the squad is 5.

The students that have both a Netflix and Hulu account is 12.

How to calculate the number?

We can use the principle of inclusion-exclusion to solve this problem. The principle states that if we want to know how many students have either a Netflix or a Hulu account (or both), we can add the number of students who have a Netflix account to the number of students who have a Hulu account and then subtract the number of students who have both.

So, using the information given:

Netflix or Hulu = Netflix + Hulu - (Netflix and Hulu)

87 = 53 + 46 - (Netflix and Hulu)

To find the number of students who have both a Netflix and Hulu account we can solve for (Netflix and Hulu) :

(Netflix and Hulu) = Netflix + Hulu - 87

(Netflix and Hulu) = 53 + 46 - 87

(Netflix and Hulu) = 12

Answers

The angles which measure 20 degrees are∠1 ,∠5 ,∠7 ,∠9 ,∠11 ,∠14 ,∠16. The solution has been obtained using the properties of parallel lines.

What are parallel lines?

Parallel lines are any two or more lines that lie in the same plane, are equally spaced apart, and never cross one another.

We are given t || x and k || w and m∠3 = 20°

Using the properties of parallel lines, we get -

∠3 = ∠1            (As these are vertically opposite angles)

∠3 = ∠5           (As these are alternate interior angles)

∠3 = ∠7             (As these are corresponding angles )

Now,

∠4 = 180 - ∠3                     (As they form a linear pair)

∠10 = 180 - ∠9                    (As they form a linear pair)

Also,

∠10 = ∠4                            (Parallelogram's opposite angles are same)

So,

180 - ∠9 = 180 - ∠3

∠3 = ∠9                                                       .... [ii]

∠9 = ∠11               (As these are vertically opposite angles)

∠3 = ∠11               ( from [ii] )                                           .... [iii]

∠11 = ∠14               (As these are alternate interior angles)

∠3 = ∠14               ( from [iii] )                                               .... [iv]

∠14 = ∠16               (As these are vertically opposite angles)

∠3 = ∠16               ( from [iv] )

Hence, the angles which measure 20 degrees are

∠1 ,∠5 ,∠7 ,∠9 ,∠11 ,∠14 ,∠16.

Read the speech "Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be True" and consider the advertisement "The Opportunity of a Lifetime." Then, answer the question.Voluntourism: An Opportunity Too Good to be TrueA Speech to the Student Body of Evergreen High[1] Picture this: It's Spring Break, and you fly off to some country where there's lush rainforests and beautiful, blue coastlines to explore. There's also people in need, so you decide to blend your vacation with volunteering. Volunteering as a tourist, or voluntourism, seems like a great way to explore new regions and help people at the same time. However, this "volunteer plus travel" experience can actually harm local communities. While many teens might view traveling and volunteering abroad as a worthwhile adventure, there are more genuine and effective ways to make a difference.[2] Most would agree that volunteering in general is a worthy use of time. However, what if you found out the children you are "helping" are actually being kept in poor conditions so voluntourists will spend money to come to the local area? Dale Rolfe, a supporter of ethical voluntourism, explains the shocking reality that "Animal sanctuaries and orphanages are often manufactured for the voluntourist...encouraging a cycle of exploiting the very animals and children the volunteers are trying to help."[3] Proponents of the "volunteer plus travel" experience also argue that traveling to new places builds character and is a valuable way to learn about different cultures. With voluntourism, however, participants often pursue experiences that are all about them. For example, they sign up to build a school for a gold star on their resume, but they have no real building skills and take jobs away from local construction workers (Schulten). Or, they arrive to teach English but instead take selfies with the locals. One world traveler and ethical voluntourist believes voluntourism "can perpetuate small minded views of the world by taking insulated, fake, and structured experiences and selling them as unabridged and eye opening" (Carlos). The voluntour experience is a mirage. The voluntourist's eyes are not opened to real life at the destination, and lasting change is not achieved.[4] If you want a genuine experience where you can see a lasting impact, there are better options than voluntourism. You can volunteer in your local community. Give an hour every week to your town's animal rescue. Serve monthly dinners to the homeless. Be a reliable, positive influence on a child who needs a mentor. Studies show that volunteering and forming lasting relationships with those you help has a positive impact on your physical and emotional health. In fact, blood pressure is reduced, memory is improved, and rates of depression are reduced (Michaels).[5] There is another reason to look into alternatives to voluntourism. Did you know the average "voluntour" travel package costs $3,400 (Rolfe)? Could that travel money be better spent? If the world's citizens are your passion, it could go to an international organization. If you care about education, your funds can be used to buy books for students in faraway lands. If you want villagers to have clean water, contribute funds to local efforts to dig wells. If you want to experience a different culture, travel to the country as a guest, and learn from the locals how you can best help them after you've returned home. But do not voluntour.[6] In reality, there are better ways to make a difference. Voluntourism might appear to be an adventure that blends travel and helping others, but it does little except provide a costly, superficial experience that might actually do more harm than good. So, volunteer where you are most needed-at home, where you can stay to see the job through and form genuine, lasting relationships. Choose a beautiful coastline closer to home and send the travel money you saved to an international organization that will put it to good use.
