A student is writing an argumentative essay about why people should be careful tuna consumers for her life science class. Read the paragraph from her report and the directions that follow. (q40)

Apart from Japan, the United States is the biggest consumer of tuna in the world. While tuna can have some nutritional benefits for humans, it is important that we take a close look at the tuna we are eating for several reasons. First, many types of tuna are endangered, overfished, or at least threatened. We must educate ourselves on the type of tuna we are eating to make sure that we are not eating any that may become extinct. Second, tuna fishermen sometimes catch other marine life unintentionally. This "bycatch" most often includes dolphins and birds. These animals are innocent victims. For this reason, we must make sure that the tuna we eat is "dolphin friendly." Third, tuna contains mercury, which is poisonous to humans. It is recommended, therefore, that we not eat too much of it.

The student found information in sources. Choose two pieces of information that support the claim in the student's paragraph.

A

The most popular seafood worldwide is shrimp.

B

Tuna is a delicious and nutritious food that should be part of a healthy daily diet.

C

Tuna is also included in many pet foods; dogs and cats often enjoy eating tuna.

D

Canned white tuna has high levels of mercury that can be especially harmful to young children and pregnant women.

E

Tuna is versatile in its taste and relatively inexpensive, so more people should eat it as opposed to red meat or pork.

F

To be considered a "dolphin safe" tuna fisherman, one must adhere to five strict guidelines set out by an international organization that protects dolphins.

Read the following passage carefully before you choose your answer.

This passage is taken from an eighteenth-century letter from a president to the citizens of the United States of America.

(1) So likewise, a passionate attachment of one nation for another produces a variety of evils. Sympathy for the favorite nation, facilitating the illusion of an imaginary common interest in cases where no real common interest exists, and infusing into one the enmities of the other, betrays the former into a participation in the quarrels and wars of the latter without adequate inducement or justification. It leads also to concessions to the favorite nation of privileges denied to others which is apt doubly to injure the nation making the concessions; by unnecessarily parting with what ought to have been retained, and by exciting jealousy, ill-will, and a disposition to retaliate, in the parties from whom equal privileges are withheld.

(2) As avenues to foreign influence in innumerable ways, such attachments are particularly alarming to the truly enlightened and independent patriot. How many opportunities do they afford to tamper with domestic factions, to practice the arts of seduction, to mislead public opinion, to influence or awe the public councils? Such an attachment of a small or weak towards a great and powerful nation dooms the former to be the satellite of the latter.

(3) Against the insidious wiles of foreign influence (I conjure you to believe me, fellow-citizens) the jealousy of a free people ought to be constantly awake, since history and experience prove that foreign influence is one of the most baneful foes of republican government. But that jealousy to be useful must be impartial; else it becomes the instrument of the very influence to be avoided, instead of a defense against it. Excessive partiality for one foreign nation and excessive dislike of another cause those whom they actuate to see danger only on one side, and serve to veil and even second the arts of influence on the other. Real patriots who may resist the intrigues of the favorite are liable to become suspected and odious, while its tools and dupes usurp the applause and confidence of the people, to surrender their interests.

(4) The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible. So far as we have already formed engagements, let them be fulfilled with perfect good faith. Here let us stop. Europe has a set of primary interests which to us have none; or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies, the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves by artificial ties in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics, or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities.

(5) Our detached and distant situation invites and enables us to pursue a different course. If we remain one people under an efficient government, the period is not far off when we may defy material injury from external annoyance; when we may take such an attitude as will cause the neutrality we may at any time resolve upon to be scrupulously respected; when belligerent nations, under the impossibility of making acquisitions upon us, will not lightly hazard the giving us provocation; when we may choose peace or war, as our interest, guided by justice, shall counsel.

(6) Why forego the advantages of so peculiar a situation? Why quit our own to stand upon foreign ground? Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition, rivalship, interest, humor or caprice?

(7) It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world; so far, I mean, as we are now at liberty to do it; for let me not be understood as capable of patronizing infidelity to existing engagements. I hold the maxim no less applicable to public than to private affairs, that honesty is always the best policy. I repeat it, therefore, let those engagements be observed in their genuine sense. But, in my opinion, it is unnecessary and would be unwise to extend them.

Which stylistic device does the author use in paragraph three to illustrate the potential ills of foreign alliances? (5 points)
Descriptive adjectives
Elevated diction
Extended metaphor
Rhetorical question

Part C- Connect and Reflect
In this lesson you analyzed how Armstrong uses structure and pacing to create tension and suspense. In doing so, you
considered how this author keeps readers on the edge of their seats. In the Unit Activity, you'll write a literature analysis
on authorial techniques.
Consider other authorial techniques you've seen in the texts you've read. How is the structure and pacing in "New
Chicago" similar to or different from other stories you have read?

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

It's difficult to compare the structure and pacing in "New Chicago" to other stories without knowing the specific texts in question. However, in general, many authors use structure and pacing as tools to create tension and suspense in their stories. This can be done through the use of short, choppy sentences and paragraphs to build a sense of urgency, or through the use of long, drawn-out sentences and paragraphs to create a sense of foreboding.

In terms of structure, some stories may use a non-linear structure to create a sense of disorientation and uncertainty in the reader, while others may use a linear structure to provide a clear sense of progression and build tension through the revelation of new information.

Additionally, authors may use different techniques to control the pacing of their stories. For example, some may use a fast-paced narrative to create a sense of urgency, while others may use a slow-paced narrative to build tension through anticipation.

It's also worth noting that different genres may have distinct conventions in terms of structure and pacing. For example, a thriller novel would likely have a different structure and pacing than a literary fiction novel.

What are the historical and cultural influences that have shaped the development of the English language throughout its history, and how have these influences affected the current linguistic landscape of the English-speaking world in terms of dialects, lexicon, and grammatical structures?

Answers

Answer:The English language has been shaped by a number of historical and cultural influences throughout its history. The earliest form of English, Old English, was heavily influenced by the Germanic languages brought to Britain by Germanic tribes such as the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes. The Norman Conquest of 1066 introduced a significant amount of French vocabulary into the language, which can still be seen in many words used today. The influence of Latin, through the Church and the Renaissance, also added many words to the English language. In the modern era, the growth of the British Empire and the rise of the United States as a superpower have led to the spread of English as a global language and have further influenced the development of the language.

These historical and cultural influences have affected the current linguistic landscape of the English-speaking world in a number of ways. Dialects of English vary greatly, from British English to American English, and even within those categories, there are many different dialects and accents. The lexicon of the English language is also incredibly diverse, with words borrowed from many different languages. Grammatical structures also vary, with American English often being considered less formal than British English.

intimidation or harassment by white members of the community. Compare and contract the
reactions between two of these characters: Cassie, Mama, Papa, Stacey, and Mr. Morrison.
Explain why you think the two sets of reactions differ.

Answers

In chapters 8 and 9 of Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, several characters react to acts of intimidation or harassment by white members of the community. Two characters whose reactions can be compared and contrasted are Cassie and Mama.

Cassie, the protagonist, is a young girl who is deeply affected by the racism and discrimination she experiences in her community. When she witnesses the burning of the Berry's store, she feels a mix of anger, frustration, and fear. She is also upset when she is humiliated by the white storekeeper, Lillian Jean, who refuses to serve her and her family. Cassie's reactions to these events are primarily emotional and personal; she feels hurt and angry at the injustice of it all.

What is the comparison of the story?

Mama, on the other hand, reacts to these events in a more pragmatic and practical manner. When the store is burned, she is concerned about the practical implications of the loss and how it will affect her family.

When Cassie is humiliated by Lillian Jean, Mama responds by organizing a boycott of the store and encouraging the black community to support the store owned by a black man. Mama's reactions to these events are more focused on finding solutions and taking action to make a change.

Therefore, the  two sets of reactions differ because Cassie is a child who has not yet developed the ability to see things in a more pragmatic and practical way. Her emotions are raw and her reactions are immediate and personal. Mama, on the other hand, has more life experience and has learned to deal with the injustices of racism in a more practical way.

People who live in such communities often have a strong sense of tradition and history and are often more connected to the natural environment.

How do you deal with breakups? Can you easily shift your perceptions and interactions with someone that you have been romantic with, from relational partner to friend? Or, do you find you have difficulty adjusting your perceptions?

Answers

How I would deal with a break up will honestly be really difficult because knowing that you have spent you’re time and love affection and stuff like that it will hurt. Honestly I would cry a lot knowing that they will move on and I’m just stuck there still madly in love with them, and especially the worst part is having to move on. Moving on trying to make someone jealous, taking revenge on whatever the other partner did will be soooo difficult. You still will want to be stuck with them and still will want to spend more seconds, minutes, hours, day, weeks, months, years with them. You love them deeply and sometimes you will want to self harm yourself or just not be yourself no more, you just sit there and wonder how and why was the reason they left you… you deeply love them and miss them.
