Read the excerpts from “Take the Tortillas Out of Your Poetry” and “Speaking Arabic.”

My friend had concluded that if he took his language and culture out of his poetry, he stood a better chance of receiving a fellowship. He took out his native language, the poetic patois of our reality, the rich mixture of Spanish, English, pachuco and street talk which we know so well. In other words, he took the tortillas out of his poetry, which is to say he took the soul out of his poetry.

At a neighborhood fair in Texas, somewhere between the German Oom-pah Sausage Stand and the Mexican Gorditas booth, I overheard a young man say to his friend, “I wish I had a heritage. Sometimes I feel—so lonely for one.” And the tall American trees were dangling their thick branches right down over his head.

Which best states how the structure of each excerpt supports a different tone?
1. Anaya structures his text as an anecdote, which gives it a humorous tone, while Nye structures her text as a counterclaim, which gives it a defensive tone.

2.Anaya structures his text as an explanation, which gives it an authoritative tone, while Nye structures her text as an impression, which gives it a soothing tone.

3.Anaya structures his text as a theory, which gives it an academic tone, while Nye structures her text as a list, which gives it an unemotional tone.

4.Anaya structures his text as a news report, which gives it a neutral tone, while Nye structures her text as a critique, which gives it a judgmental tone.

Answers

The structure of each excerpt given above in  “Take the Tortillas Out of Your Poetry” and “Speaking Arabic”, supports a different tone, as Anaya structures his text as an explanation, which gives it an authoritative tone, while Nye structures her text as an impression, which gives it a soothing tone.

What is the tone in “Take the Tortillas Out of Your Poetry” and “Speaking Arabic”?

There is a use of two different tones in the excerpts given above. Anaya, the main character in the first excerpt, uses an authoritative tone while she tries to give an explanation.

4.How does compassion develop one's sense of gratitude?

5. Who is a compassionate man in the true sense of the term?
Ans......

Answers

Answer:

1. sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others

2. Compassion is a character trait that is present in everyone. However, it is also a trait that sometimes gets forgotten. It is both innate and can be learned and enhanced. It is something you can develop with practice. It involves two things: intention and action.

3. To me, God and compassion are the same. Compassion is the joy of sharing. It’s doing small things for the love of each other-just a smile, carrying a bucket of water, or showing some simple kindness. These are the small things that makeup compassion.

Compassion means trying to share and understand the suffering of people. And I think it’s very good when people suffer. To me, that’s really like a kiss from Jesus. And a sign, also, that this person has come so close to Jesus, sharing his passion.

It is only pride and selfishness and coldness that keep us from having compassion. When we ultimately go home to God, we are going to be judged on what we were to each other, what we did for each other, and, especially, how much love we put in that. It’s not how much we give, but how much love we put in the doing ~ that’s compassion in action.

One’s religion has nothing to do with compassion. It’s our love for God that is the main thing. Many Christians and non-Christians come to help in our houses in Calcutta and throughout the world. We have volunteers of all religions working with our aides day and night. Religion is meant to help us get closer to God, not meant to separate us…. true religion, no? All God wants is for us to love him. The way we can show our love for Him is to serve others.

We need a life of deep prayer to be able to give until it hurts. It seems the more we have, the less we give. And the less we have, the more we can give.

You may ask how the contemplative life fits together with compassion in action. It fits together by bringing union with God. Jesus said, “ Whether you do it the last of my brethren, you are doing it to me.” If you do everything for him, you are acting as contemplative in the heart of the world.

There is contemplative life where people separate themselves from the world and live a life of prayer, of sacrifice. We are out in the world doing that- being contemplatives in the heart of the world.

We need a life of deep prayer to be able to give until it hurts. It seems the more we have, the less we give. And the less we have, the more we can give.

The need is great for food, clothes, medicine, and tender love and care. This is the greatest need. We have homes for the dying, for lepers, for children, for the poorest of the poor. And now, in the United States, we have homes for people with AIDS, also.

My message to the people of today is simple. We must love one another as God loves each one of us. To be able to love, we need a clean heart. Prayer is what gives us a clean heart. The fruit of prayer is a deepening of faith and the fruit of faith is love. The fruit of love is service, which is compassion in action.

Religion has nothing to do with compassion; it is our love for God that is the main thing because we have all been created for the sole purpose to love and be loved.

that the man knows how to build a wall

that the man can pick up big rocks

that the man is going to attack the speaker

Answers

Answer:

that the man is determined to protect himself.

The connotation of grabbed in this poetry suggests that the man is determined to protect himself. So, the correct option is A.

What is connotation?

Connotation is the inferred meaning of a word, phrase, or sentence, as opposed to the literal, or explicit, meaning of a word or sentence. Depending on the circumstances, this meaning must be extracted.

The word "grasped" in the proposed poem, "Mending Wall," refers to "the man who is determined to defend himself," as he doubts the construction of a wall or fence because he firmly believes that they can separate people. He is adamant about his beliefs largely because he feels "it sounds dark" and "something that doesn't love wallows." So he wants to "not go to the father" to save himself from this separation.

Therefore, the correct option is A.

Four score and seven years ago our fathers brought forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that "all men are created equal."

Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived, and so dedicated, can long endure. We are met on a great battle field of that war. We have come to dedicate a portion of it, as a final resting place for those who died here, that the nation might live. This we may, in all propriety do. But, in a larger sense, we can not dedicate—we can not consecrate—we can not hallow, this ground—The brave men, living and dead, who struggled here, have hallowed it, far above our poor power to add or detract. The world will little note, nor long remember what we say here; while it can never forget what they did here.

It is rather for us, the living, we here be dedicated to the great task remaining before us—that, from these honored dead we take increased devotion to that cause for which they here, gave the last full measure of devotion—that we here highly resolve these dead shall not have died in vain; that the nation, shall have a new birth of freedom, and that government of the people by the people for the people, shall not perish from the earth.

PATHOS, is the type of rhetoric does Adichie use to describe her feelings about the interaction with her roommate.

Pathos, along with logos and ethos, is one of the three "modes of persuasion" in rhetoric (the art of effective speaking or writing). Pathos is an argument that appeals to an audience's emotions. Some additional key details about pathos:

You may also hear the word "pathos" used to mean "a quality that invokes sadness or pity," as in the statement, "The actor's performance was full of pathos." However, this guide focuses specifically on the rhetorical technique of pathos used in literature and public speaking to persuade readers and listeners through an appeal to emotion.

The three "modes of persuasion"—pathos, logos, and ethos—were originally defined by Aristotle.

In contrast to pathos, which appeals to the listener's emotions, logos appeals to the audience's sense of reason, while ethos appeals to the audience based on the speaker's authority.

Although Aristotle developed the concept of pathos in the context of oratory and speechmaking, authors, poets, and advertisers also use pathos frequently.
