A market economy is a tool for organising productive activity; it is a useful and effective instrument.  Market societies operate differently.  Market ties, market incentives, and market ideals come to rule all facets of life in a market society, which is both a setting and a way of life.  That's what worries me.  Unknowingly, during the past three decades, we have shifted from having a market economy to becoming a market society—a society where almost everything is for sale.

It's intriguing why, in the wake of the financial crisis, there hasn't really been a discussion about the function of markets in our society.  Given the three decades of market faith—some might even call it market triumphalism—it seemed like the time was right for such a debate.  Then the financial crisis occurred.  But the function of markets and money in our society hasn't really been reexamined in any depth.
