Number 5: Stanzas 12-13 contribute to the theme of the poem by showing how Casey's pride gets the best of him and he ends up striking out.

Discussion questions:

1. Casey's pride causes him to strike out because he thinks he is going to hit no matter what.

2. Casey attained this power by working hard and being good at baseball. We elevate athletes because we admire their ability and talent in the sport they play just like Casey's fans admire him when the text says, "...It pounded on the mountain and recoiled upon the flat, For Casey, mighty casey, was advancing to the bat."

3. Casey does not utilize this power wisely. His power and fame are corrupt because he is so arrogant to the point where he thinks he controls his fans.

THE MATCH

There never was a time when the world was without fire, but there was a time when men did not know how to kindle fire; and after they learned how to kindle one, it was a long, long time before they learned how to kindle one easily. In these days we can kindle a fire without any trouble, because we can easily get a match; but we must remember that the match is one of the most wonderful things in the world, and that it took men thousands of years to learn how to make one. Let us learn the history of this familiar little object, the match.

Fire was first given to man by nature itself. When a forest is set on fire by cinders from a neighboring volcano, or when a tree is set ablaze by a thunderbolt, we may say that nature strikes a match. In the early history of the world, nature had to kindle all the fires, for man by his own effort was unable to produce a spark. The first method, then, of getting fire for use was to light sticks of wood at a flame kindled by nature—by a volcano, perhaps, or by a stroke of lightning. These firebrands were carried to the home and used in kindling the fires there. The fire secured in this way was carefully guarded and was kept burning as long as possible. But the flame, however faithfully watched, would sometimes be extinguished. A sudden gust of wind or a sudden shower would put it out. Then a new firebrand would have to be secured, and this often meant a long journey and a deal of trouble.

In 1827, John Walker, a druggist in a small English town, tipped a splint with sulphur, chlorate of potash, and sulphid of antimony, and rubbed it on sandpaper, and it burst into flame. The druggist had discovered the first friction-chemical match, the kind we use to-day. It is called friction-chemical because it is made by mixing certain chemicals together and rubbing them. Although Walker's match did not require the bottle of acid, nevertheless it was not a good one. It could be lighted only by hard rubbing, and it sputtered and threw fire in all directions. In a few years, however, phosphorus was substituted on the tip for antimony, and the change worked wonders. The match could now be lighted with very little rubbing, and it was no longer necessary to have sandpaper upon which to rub it. It would ignite when rubbed on any dry surface, and there was no longer any sputtering. This was the phosphorus match, the match with which we are so familiar.

What is the main idea of this text?
Firebrands were hard to keep lit.
Nature provided fire to early humans.
The history of the match is interesting.
The match made life easier for humans.

Answer:

The correct answer is to inform readers about the ways young people improve the world.

Explanation:

By titling the book "It's Our World, Too!: Young People Who Are Making a Difference", the author clearly wants to point out the stories and accomplishments of young people who changed the world in one way or another. Maybe the author will mention writers, inventors and scientists that have managed to change an aspect of the world for the better at a very young age (and who are still young to this day).

Mother announced that the plain cream cheese was not to be eaten until we were crossing the plains in Kansas.

A. Homograph; the two words are pronounced the same but have different meanings and sometimes different spellings.

B. Homophone; the two words are written the same but have different meanings and sometimes different pronunciations.

C. Homophone; the two words are pronounced the same but have different meanings and sometimes different spellings.

D. Homograph; the two words are written the same but have different meanings and sometimes different pronunciations.

Answer:

C. Homophone; the two words are pronounced the same but have different meanings and sometimes different spellings.

Explanation:

The words "plain" and "plains" are examples of homophones. This means that these words have the same pronunciation, but have totally different meanings, within a sentence. Often, homophone words have the same spelling, or slightly different spellings as is the case for "plain" and "plains", but the real way to identify this type of word is through the same pronoun, but with a different meaning.

Homograph, on the other hand, are words that are written in the same way, but have different meanings.

after reading "from deep survival" by Laurence Gonzalez, write an argument about what it takes to survive a life-threatening event.be sure to cite evidence from Gonzales's ideas to support your claim.

what is the prompt asking you to write about?

do you agree with Gonzales's central idea idea-his most important message about survival?.

Answers

Answer:1. Humans notice patterns in the world, simulate potential consequences, and make predictions about what will happen next - constantly and automatically.

The human mind is essentially a prediction machine. Every moment of every day, your brain is collecting information about the world around you. Your mind’s Pattern Matching capability isolates the important parts, and your capacity for Mental Simulation helps you figure out what to expect.

Our pattern matching and mental simulation capabilities evolved to keep us alive. The better we’re able to predict what’s next, the better we’re able to stay safe and take advantage of opportunities.

2. When our mental models don’t accurately reflect reality, we can suddenly find ourselves in big trouble.

Your mind’s ability to predict what happens next is limited: it’s only as good as the accuracy of the information you have and the patterns stored in your memory. If a fact is wrong, or a pattern is not quite accurate, you can find yourself in dire straights very quickly.

In business, even markets that have been solid for decades can experience sudden and extreme difficulties. Publishing was a stable and profitable business for hundreds of years - until it wasn’t. Housing prices always went up - until they didn’t.

3. You must train yourself to see what’s really happening and changing around you without freezing or denying the truth of the situation.

When the Environment around you changes, your mental models must change along with it. Failing to update your patterns and predictions can lead you to make disastrous decisions.

Unfortunately, Threat Lockdown makes us prone to freeze when we face the unexpected. Gonzales calls the situations that trigger threat lockdown the “Four Poisons of the Mind": Fear, Confusion, Hesitation, Surprise.

4. Always have a backup / failsafe /contingency plan.

Since we’re not omniscient, unexpected situations will always arise - some very good, some very bad. You never know when or where something bad will affect you, so it pays to be as prepared as possible in advance.

Fail-Safes and backup plans are invaluable. Having resources in reserve or a retreat/regroup option at the ready helps cover you in the event of disaster.

Here’s the catch - your fail-safes and backups have to be prepared in advance. If your computer hard drive crashes, it’s too late to look into backups. A little planning and preparation now can save you a world of hurt later.

5. Sunk costs can kill you - know when to walk away.

Sometimes, it’s not worth pushing a project to completion. If you’re a day’s climb from summiting Everest and a killer storm blows in, you’re better off descending… and living to climb another day.

It’s important to realize how difficult these decisions can be in the moment - and be emotionally prepared to make them. Sunk Costs kill because we’re emotionally invested in the result we’re seeking, so we throw caution to the wind and push forward. That’s a recipe for disaster.

Define your success criteria in advance, and if something critical changes, be prepared to walk away.

Frank Lloyd Wright set out to create an "architecture for democracy." There is much evidence
that we are still far from creating a satisfactory "architecture for democracy." Badly conceived
urban housing developments, repetitious groupings of high-rise buildings, have turned into
vertical slums as bad as the ancient row houses, tenements, and low-rise apartments they
replaced. Ghettos are still a part of all major cities. An airplane view shows almost every city
to be largely surrounded by tracts of monotonous development. There are identical small
lots. There is a seemingly endless repetition punctured only by school and shopping centers.
The aerial view reveals the devastation of the landscape for commercial and industrial

Frank Lloyd Wright set out to create an "architecture for democracy." However, there is much evidence  that we are still far from creating a satisfactory "architecture for democracy." To elaborate, Badly conceived  urban housing developments, repetitious groupings of high-rise buildings, have turned into  vertical slums as bad as the ancient row houses, tenements, and low-rise apartments they  replaced. Even Ghettos are still a part of all major cities. In fact, an airplane view shows almost every city  to be largely surrounded by tracts of monotonous development. Markedly, there are identical small  lots and furthermore, seemingly endless repetition punctured only by school and shopping centers.  Therefore, the aerial view reveals the devastation of the landscape for commercial and industrial  purposes. Likewise, there are several other evidences of thoughtless disregard for the environment.

Transitional expressions are described as the words or phrases that primarily function as a bridge to ensure a smooth transition from one idea to another. It not only functions to bind the ideas together as a coherent whole but also promotes a better understanding for the readers. It helps in ensuring a smooth and uninterrupted flow of ideas that guides the readers and connect the ideas in a single thread without any break.
