Read the excerpt.
The benefits of conducting school year-round greatly outweigh giving students a summer break. With year-round schooling, students can remain active in their learning. A long summer break makes it easy for students to forget what they learned during the previous school year, making it harder to apply learned skills during the next year. Allowing students to have weeks of free time means that their skills will be dulled when they return. With shorter breaks, they will forget fewer skills and be able to start each new year performing at their maximum capability. Summer vacations are death to American education since students will forget everything they learn each year.
Which statement explains how the author’s use of a straw man impacts the overall argument?
A. It weakens the overall argument by distracting from the benefits of year-round school by focusing on what students do with free time.
B. It strengthens the overall argument by pointing out that students’ time spent at school is mostly wasted.
C. It weakens the overall argument by inviting criticism with the exaggeration of the amount of learning students lose in the summer.
D. It strengthens the overall argument by advocating for students’ learning and pushing for best practices.
Use of a straw man weakens the overall argument by inviting criticism with the exaggeration of the amount of learning students lose in the summer. (option C)
What is a straw man fallacy? The straw man is a logical fallacy commonly used in highly emotional or polemical debates. The speaker attacks an argument that the opponent has never made. It is done by distorting the opponent's original argument, replacing it for a different one (a straw man) that is easier to attack and defeat.
We find a straw man in the excerpt when the speaker says that students "forget everything they learn each year" when they are given weeks of rest, such as happens in summer vacations. As we know, this is not a truthful argument. Students may indeed forget something, but not all of it is lost.
Such exaggeration ends up weakening the speaker's overall argument that it is best to have students attend school all year round. Therefore, we can select option C as the correct answer.

Patrick lived in Emoryville, but every Saturday morning he rode two city buses to his uncle’s bookstore in Northview, where he worked. He didn’t mind the commute because he loved his job. He loved spending time with his uncle, but he also loved going to work because he had become friends with Andrew, one of his co-workers. The boys would talk about everything from baseball scores to movies to favorite pizza toppings.
So this Saturday, when Patrick got to work, he and Andrew got to talking as they always did.
“Hey, Pat,” Andrew said casually.
“Hey,” said Patrick. “Did you have a good week?”
“Yeah,” he said. “Great week. My basketball team made it into the semifinals. The game is tonight. We’re playing Emoryville, our nemesis.”
Before Patrick could say another word, Andrew continued. “I don’t like Emoryville. I don’t think I could ever be friends with someone from that town. Our schools are such rivals.”
Patrick was speechless.
“Where are you from, Pat? I can’t believe I’ve never asked you that before!”
Patrick fumbled over his words. “Not too far from here,” he said before he quickly changed the subject to the new shipment of graphic novels.

What should I do to get out of intermediate level of my English and to get the advanced level in writing. Share your thoughts. I have been stuck at intermediate level for a long time.
As someone who's been fluent in writing and speaking in an eloquent way from a young age, I'm not sure I 100% understand your situation, but I can try to give you some tips that I've noticed my teachers have liked about my writing.
I will pause here to say, however, that I have a rather formal writing style. I wouldn't necessarily mimic this part of writing, because if you get caught in it as a norm (as I have) you'll sound incredibly serious when you don't necessarily want to. Whenever I write to a friend to tell them how much I care, I always sound so stiff and proper. My friends and I joke that when I write something important I start to sound like Sesshomaru.
But, on to the tips.
One of the biggest ones I would recommend is word variety. Word variety is the use of many synonyms so that your writing is less dull and more intriguing to the reader. Now, word variety is a good thing, but try to make sure that you don't use ridiculously obscure synonyms. If you wanted to use a synonym for dull, don't use 'lackluster'. Use tarnished or unpolished. Lackluster is just a little too obscure.
I would also recommend that punctuation and correct grammar become of the UTMOST importance in your writing. Correct usage of grammar and punctuation is critical for good writing.
Thirdly and lastly, be descriptive with your words. Writing is an art, and with your words, you should be painting a clear and understandable picture of the scene you are describing, or the instructions you are trying to give, or simply the fact you are expanding upon. But don't make your descriptions too long or the reader could get bored with the amount of detail. Writing is a balancing act.
Well, here I've gone and written you an essay on writing. My apologies if you look at this and go "oh my WORD this is long". But I hope this answers your question.
Regards, Toremi
