Doughnuts are a dessert tradition enjoyed by millions of Americans everyday. A little known fact is that doughnuts have been invented at least twice. Archaeologists working in the southwestern United States have uncovered petrified fried cakes with holes in them. These early doughnuts were found in prehistoric Native American ruins. No further information surfaces until the sixteenth-century, when, in Holland, Dutch bakers prepared deep-fried batter known as an olykoek, or “oil cake.” These oil cakes, named for their high oil content, were made with sweetened dough and sprinkled with sugar.

Pilgrims brought the delicious and popular confection to America. The round oil cakes made in New England acquired the name of “dough nuts” because they were small, about the size of a walnut, and because they were made of dough. The name “doughnut” remains in use today, but is sometimes spelled “donut.” Stories vary, but most agree that the hole in the center of the doughnut is credited to a New England sailor, Hanson Gregory.

Grown by many U.S farmers, bread has been an American staple for many years. Because many people needed to save every last piece of bread they had, people began to experiment with the bits and pieces of leftover bread. Hanson Gregory was a sea captain from Maine who worked on a lime trading ship. He would often bake and fry cakes from remaining bread bits he sweetened. Tasty, but soggy in the middle, the fried cakes needed some changes. Captain Gregory experimented with cutting out the center of the cakes. This was a practical move which allowed increased surface area for more uniform frying. The result was the elimination of the dessert’s soggy center. Captain Hanson Gregory had stumbled upon a superb solution and redefined the shape of the pastry. The circular ring shape with a center hole is known as the American doughnut shape.

Doughnuts can be placed into three categories; glazed, filled, and cake doughnuts. Most popular are the glazed doughnuts, which are made with yeast and sweet dough. They are dipped in a sweet glaze or covered with icing, usually chocolate or vanilla. Filled doughnuts are usually made with yeast, too. The light density permits them to be inserted with a number of different fillings for extra sweetness and flavoring. The filling options include vanilla cream, chocolate cream, pudding, custard, and jellies. These filled desserts are formed into either a round or oblong shape without the center whole. Cake doughnuts are another favorite variety. They are the densest and heaviest pastry of the doughnut family because they are not made with yeast. These treats derive their name from their cake-like density. In addition, the name is appropriate because of the popular cake toppings used on them, such as confetti sprinkles, frosting striping, coconut, and chopped nuts.

Americans love doughnuts! Once only available as delightful treats and specialty items on bakery shelves, delicious doughnuts are now on grocery store shelves everywhere! Also, franchise stores such as Dunkin’ Donuts have been operating since 1950. Thirty five varieties are available, so no customer needs to be content with just one variety. More than 2.7 million customers enjoy doughnuts everyday. Even the increased emphasis on calorie counting and healthy eating has done little to impact the demand for doughnuts. National doughnut chains have introduced whole wheat doughnuts and are taking steps to reduce the grams of trans fat in their products. Whatever the fat and calorie content, these delicious ring-shaped or filled treats known as doughnuts dominate the dessert world.

what is informal letter

Answers

Answer:

An informal letter is a letter you would write to a friend, a family member or an acquaintance. The classic informal letter has five parts as follows:

1. Address Block Includes your return address and the date of writing the letter. This block is usually right-justified.

2. Opening Salutation This is the opening greeting; typically "Dear John".  Left-justify this block.

3. Body Block This is your actual letter content (introduction + main parts + final paragraphs). It can be anywhere from a few paragraphs in length up to multiple pages. In the exam the length of the letter will be defined in the task (usually somewhere between 120 and 180 words). The body paragraphs should be left justified.

4. Closing Salutation This is where you say goodbye. Typically, closing salutations for informal letters include such phrases as: "Yours truly,", "Your friend,", "All the best,", Take care,". These days, more informal closing salutations are also acceptable, such as: "See you soon,", "Don't be a stranger,", etc. Left-justify the closing salutation.

5. Signature Block Since it is an informal letter to someone who knows you reasonably well, just sign your first name. Also left-justify this block.

Explanation:

An informal letter is a non-official letter that we usually use to write to our friends, family or relatives. These letters are personal letters that are not used for official purposes.Unlike formal letters, you don't have to mention the subject line for informal letters.

can someone explain capulets and montagues rivalry in act 2 of romeo and juliet thank you

Answers

Answer:

Basically, in Act 2, Romeo and Juliet are married by Friar Lawrence, in hopes of uniting the two factions. Romeo kills Tybalt(Capulet)  (he killed his friend, Mercutio, a Montague)  and now Romeo is banished. The Nurse and Juliet freak about this for a while, and Juliet is told by her father she is to marry a man named Paris despite being secretly married. Friar Lawrence gives Juliet a potion so she will go into a coma and appear dead so she can run off with Romeo. No one tells Romeo this. Romeo thinks she's really dead and kills himself. Juliet wakes up, finds out Romeo is dead, and kills HERSELF. This, weirdly, ends the Capulet's feud because they both realize they lost two kids to their irrational disagreement. This is forshadowed in the play's prologue  when they say "From forth the fatal loins of these two foes. A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life; Whose misadventured piteous overthrows. Do with their death bury their parents' strife." (Shakespeare). Act 2 ends with this age old conflict being rectified and the two factions are now friends.

The astronomers that discovered a new body in our solar system have found out more about the planetoid. Sedna is between 800 and 1,100 miles in diameter. It is about three-quarters the size of Pluto and is over 8 billion miles from Earth. The frozen world of Sedna is believed to be the farthest known object within our solar system. Astronomer Mike Brown from the California Institute of Technology led the NASA-funded team that found Sedna. Chad Trujillo of the Gemini Observatory in Hawaii and David Rabinowitz of Yale University also assisted in the discovery. They found Sedna using a 48-inch telescope at Caltech's Palomar Observatory, which is east of San Diego. Within days of the discovery, other astronomers used telescopes to find the object. The team also believes that a tiny moon may trail Sedna. Brown's team learned that Sedna is over three times farther away from the Sun than Pluto. The planetoid was named for the Inuit goddess who created the sea creatures of the Arctic. Sedna was discovered in November 2003. The Sun would be so small from Sedna that it could be completely blocked out with a pinhead. The planetoid is the largest object found orbiting the Sun since the discovery of Pluto in 1930. It is much larger than Quaoar, which was found by the same team in 2002.
