The theater room was quiet as Paulina and Roseanne slipped in through the door and shut it quickly behind them. They looked around in confusion until I called out to them. The identical looks of relief on their faces were almost comical.
“Calm down,” I whispered. “We aren’t doing anything wrong. The founding members of the drama club are allowed into the theater room anytime during school hours. This is perfectly legal.”
“Sure it is,” replied Roseanne. “That’s why you’re wearing all black and hiding behind a desk, right?”
“I’m an actor, Rosie, and we’re very dramatic,” I snapped. “We have to find out what play Dominiquette and the Spacey Invaders are going to present at Talent Night. She had no right to take over the drama club. If we can outperform them onstage, we’ll be back in the club in no time.”
“Maybe we could just meet with Dominiquette and talk about this whole big mess,” said Paulina. I scoffed and continued digging through the drama club’s collection of costumes. Dominiquette was the unofficial leader of the group nicknamed the Spacey Invaders, and she and her cronies had taken over the drama club from me and my friends. She would no sooner listen to me than a spider would listen to a fly.
“Hey, here is something!” Roseanne called out. “It’s a skull. Do you think they’re going to do something as predictable as Hamlet?”
“Not likely,” replied Paulina. “I bet that’s left over from last year.”
“I found it!” I screeched, holding a stuffed seagull over my head in triumph. “They must be planning to do Chekhov’s The Seagull. It’s the only explanation.” The three of us stared down at the fake bird with grudging admiration. As far as I knew, no high school drama club in Chambersville had ever attempted something as ambitious as The Seagull. Dominiquette was not just ambitious—she was downright devious!
“How are we going to beat them now?” asked Paulina dejectedly.
“I have no idea,” I replied. “But we only have two days to figure it out.”

Joshua was sure he would never eat it. Dong Soo explained that, because he was Korean, he ate foods that other kids at school might not. Sometimes Joshua played pranks on his older brother. Dong Soo was horrified at what he saw as his friend’s thoughtless and imprudent actions.

5Joshua thought it was important to know what would offend Dong Soo and his family. Therefore, understanding his friend’s culture was vital. Joshua asked Dong Soo to tell him about the Korean culture. Dong Soo suggested that they start with food. He explained that food was very important in Korean culture. For instance, Koreans would never sit down in front of a television while eating a meal. To Koreans, meals are more than mere nourishment—they are a way to show manners.

6Joshua was enthralled by these ideas; he eagerly asked his friend to teach him more. Dong Soo promised to teach Joshua much more about his culture and how it influences his life. Dong Soo set the table with many bowls and pairs of intricately designed chopsticks. Dong Soo taught Joshua how to hold the chopsticks and how to properly eat rice. Joshua’s mind swam trying to remember the rules, so he asked Dong Soo how he remembered.

7Dong Soo explained to Joshua that his traditional Korean background influenced his life in many ways. He told Joshua that table manners were just one of the many things he was taught. Dong Soo was used to the ways of his culture that he did not have to think about them. Dong Soo told his friend that it was easy to feel isolated and alone when you are different from some people; however, he was happy that Joshua made him feel so accepted.

“Yes, I know it's deep,” added Joe Morris, “and, besides, you can't swim, Fred; don't be silly. Who cares for a dog being drowned?”

“I do, for one,” cried Fred, and dashing into the water he waded out to where the poor dog was half-standing, half-lying, among the choking weeds. Yes, the water was deep; but stretching out his arms he contrived to catch hold of the poor animal, and he quickly waded back to shore amid ringing cheers from all the people who had now gathered on the bank to watch the plucky lad. And whose was the dog? Nobody knew; it seemed, indeed, to have no owner and no home. But Fred and his companions carried it back with them to the school, and, after having told their tale, they begged the head master to keep it for himself.
