Frankenstein is a novel written by English writer Mary Shelley. It tells about Victor Frankenstein, a young scientist who creates a sapient creature in a scientific experiment. The novel deals with numerous themes, including birth and creation, family, ambition, nature, dangerous knowledge, deceptive appearances, isolation, and revenge. The excerpts you were given demonstrate four of them.

The first excerpt reflects the theme of revenge. The phrase that leads us to this conclusion is: From that moment I declared everlasting war against the species...

The second excerpt reflects isolation. The most important lines are: ... no one will endeavor to sustain me in dejection. I shall commit my thoughts to paper...

The third excerpt reflects dangerous knowledge. The mention of new and almost unlimited powers is what leads us to this conclusion.

Finally, the last excerpt reflects the theme of deceptive appearances. The narrator tells about a fire that seemed like a good thing, something that brings warmth, but turned out to be dangerous and cause pain.

Read the excerpt from "Broken Chain."
Alfonso studied the magazine pictures of rock stars for a hairstyle. He liked the way Prince looked—and the bass player from Los Lobos. Alfonso thought he
would look cool with his hair razored into a V in the back and streaked purple. But he knew his mother wouldn't go for it. And his father, who was puro
Mexicano, would sit in his chair after work, sullen as a toad, and call him "sissy."
Alfonso didn't dare color his hair. But one day he had it butched on the top, like in the magazines. His father had come home that evening from a softball game,
happy that his team had drilled four homers in a thirteen-to-five bashing of Color Tile. He'd swaggered into the living room but had stopped cold when he saw
Alfonso and asked, not joking but with real concern, "Did you hurt your head at school? ¿Qué pasó?"
A student is writing a paragraph that makes the point that Alfonso's father is not a very likable character. Which would provide the best example of this point?
O A. Soto's description of the father swaggering and being "sullen as a toad"
O
B. Soto's description of the father as "happy that his team had drilled four homers"
OC. Soto's description of the father who would just "sit in his chair" and had just "stopped cold"
D. Soto's description of the father asking with real concern" if Alfonso hurt his head

that it is unveiling a new shuttle-bus service that will take
drivers from their cars to the front door of Shopway. "We
know that sometimes it just takes so much effort to walk
the 50 feet or so to the store, and it can be confusing and
difficult to be out of your car longer than necessary,' said a
spokesperson for the store. "And you can call for the
shuttle bus directly from your cell phone without even
having to exit your vehicle."
What is most likely the intended purpose of this passage?
A. To point out how dependent people are on their cell phones
B. To announce a new service being offered by Shopway
C. To argue that shopping experiences could be improved
OD. To suggest that many people are too lazy to walk

What is a stereotype?
a prediction about how someone will behave
a comparison between two groups of people
a generalization about an entire group of people
an inference based on strong evidence and experience

Answers

Answer:

The correct answer is C. (a generalization about an entire group of people).

Explanation:

Stereotypes are generalizations about a group of people. Whether a person is facing discrimination based on race, religion, age, gender or sexual orientation, stereotypes can lead to prejudices. People begin to assume that all people of a particular group behave in a specific way or look the same. Stereotypes are dangerous to our society because they don’t account for individuality. Each human being has an identity that doesn’t relate exclusively to being a member of a group.

Explanation:

Themes give larger meaning to the main idea in a work of literature. The main idea is specific to the story, but a theme can be applied to one's own life or experiences. Sometimes, a work of literature can contain more than one theme. It might be helpful to think of a theme as a "deeper meaning" in a piece of literature. The poet also expresses the overall theme of this poem in the lines, "Vostok's capsule clambers /Up the tall victory column." These lines bear a similar meaning to the lines from the question.

‘It’s not the possessions that matter, it’s the memories associated with them.’
Write an article for a magazine about your most prized possessions. In your article,
you could include:
1. what the possessions are
2. facts or information about the possessions
3. why the possessions are ‘prized’

Answers

Answer and Explanation:

When we talk about precious goods, many people can think of objects. In fact, there are many valuable objects, either for their economic or sentimental value. However, I would like to highlight a much more precious item than objects, the family.

Of course, not everyone has a precious family, as many families have failed to show admirable value and quality. This is not the case for my family and for that reason, I can present it as my most precious asset.

It may seem cliché and mushy, but my family has always supported me in the midst of difficulties, helped me achieve my goals and created millions of memories so precious that no objects, money or precious metals and stones can overcome.

For those who were not fortunate enough to have such a good family, I wish they could create their own families, with people with whom they have no biological bond, but are always present, stimulating progress and emotional quality.

Robert Falcon Scott

In the late 1800s, Antarctica was the last continent on Earth that had yet to be explored. Explorers from all over the world planned expeditions to claim what they could of the icy, untouched terrain. The ultimate goal was to be the first to reach the South Pole.
The first man from Great Britain to attempt the feat was a man named Robert Falcon Scott. On his first polar journey from 1901-1904, he fell short of reaching the Pole, but still returned home a hero. Not only had he set a new record for the farthest southern point ever reached, he also had conducted important scientific work along the way.
Three years later, however, a new record was set. Ernest Shackleton, one of the men from Scott's previous expedition, had set out on his own and come even closer to the Pole-though he still did not reach it. Shackleton was made a knight when he returned home to Great Britain. When Scott learned of his colleague's failed attempt, a new fire was lit in him.
Across the North Sea, another explorer by the name of Roald Amundsen was also determined to be the first person to reach the South Pole. Amundsen's dream from the time he was a child was to be the first to reach the North Pole. However, when that dream was shattered when other explorers beat him to it, Amundsen shifted his focus south. Some reports say that he began making plans in secret because he was afraid his government would stop him. Others say it was to avoid increasing British competition.
Both Amundsen and Scott planned carefully and had years of expertise and experience on their side. Their objectives and tactics, however, varied, and ultimately determined who won the race. For example, Scott included a scientist in his crew to conduct experiments, as he had before. To him, this was an important aim of exploration. Alternatively, the only purpose of Amundsen's expedition was to reach the Pole. This exclusive focus gave Amundsen the benefit of being able to put all his energy and resources toward his goal.
Another major difference was the explorers' strategies for crossing the harsh Antarctica terrain. Amundsen used highly trained dogs to pull sleds, which made travel swift and efficient. The Norwegian team was also skilled on skis, which was a significant advantage.
Although Scott's original plan included motorized sleds, these were soon abandoned because of mechanical failures. His team was left to rely on dogs and ponies that were not as well adapted to polar conditions as Amundsen's dogs. As men were forced to return to the base camp with the dogs and ponies, the remaining men pulled the sleds themselves, which was difficult and slow. Scott's choice to use ponies was harmful to the expedition in other ways. This proved detrimental on their return journey.
Scott's push for the South Pole began three weeks later than Amundsen's. While Amundsen had exceptionally good weather for travel, Scott experienced the opposite. He wrote, "Our luck in weather is preposterous." From December 4 to December 8, 1911, Scott and his crew were confined to their tents-forced to wait out a series of howling blizzards. As they ate away their precious rations, time slipped through their hands. By the time Scott's party reached the South Pole on January 17, 1912, the Norwegians had come and gone.
Scott's log records: "This is an awful place and terrible enough for us to have labored to it without reward of priority." They had lost crucial time in reaching the Pole and now faced the grim prospect of heading back to their base camp during the increasingly frigid Antarctic autumn. It was a journey they would never complete.

Which statement is an objective summary of the passage?
Robert Falcon Scott was not the first person to reach the South Pole, but he was the bravest and smartest explorer to try.
Robert Falcon Scott had a perfectly planned expedition to the South Pole that failed because of bad luck.
Robert Falcon Scott attempted to reach the South Pole first, but was beaten there by Roald Amundsen.
Robert Falcon Scott succeeded in reaching the South Pole after he first made a failed attempt.

Answers

Answer: Robert Falcon Scott attempted to reach the South Pole first, but was beaten there by Roald Amundsen.

Explanation:

When Scott´s expedition reached the South Pole on January 17, 1912, Amundsen had already been there. Scott´s party had many obstacles during their journey, due to several mistakes in their plan, not simply because of bad luck.

The fact that he did reach the South Pole after a failed attempt is only one part of the story. Scott´s being beaten there by Roald Amundsen is a main point in the passage.

"Albert strutted through the crowd, while smiling and giving handshakes."
In this sentence, the word strutted carries a connotation that shows Albert
Select one:
is trying to avoid attention
feels extremely confident
is worried about his performance
often makes funny jokes

Answers

Answer:

feels extremely confident

Explanation:

To 'Strut' means to walk about in a conceited and arrogant manner. Considering the context in which the word was now used, we cannot conclude that Albert was arrogant while walking through the crowd for he was 'smiling and giving handshakes.'

So the right connotation of the word in this context is that Albert felt extremely confident while strutting through the crowd.
