There are numerous books by Cousteau that describe his underwater explorations. Jacques Cousteau created the first scuba equipment. With his recognizable red beanie and the renowned ship Calypso, the French marine explorer, inventor, filmmaker, and conservationist traveled the globe for a significant portion of the late 20th century, enlightening millions about the oceans and its inhabitants and inspiring their protection.

Specifically, he and partner Emile Gagnan developed a self-contained system that allowed people to breathe underwater for extended periods of time. Inventing the "aqualung" in 1943, Cousteau forever altered the methods used for exploring and working beneath the surface of the ocean.
