Read the following passage carefully before you choose your answer.

This passage is taken from a nineteenth-century speech given in Massachusetts after the conviction of a fugitive slave.1

(1) I walk toward one of our ponds; but what signifies the beauty of nature when men are base? We walk to lakes to see our serenity reflected in them; when we are not serene, we go not to them. Who can be serene in a country where both the rulers and the ruled are without principle? The remembrance of my country spoils my walk. My thoughts are murder to the State, and involuntarily go plotting against her.

(2) But it chanced the other day that I scented a white water-lily, and a season I had waited for had arrived. It is the emblem of purity. It bursts up so pure and fair to the eye, and so sweet to the scent, as if to show us what purity and sweetness reside in, and can be extracted from, the slime and muck of earth. I think I have plucked the first one that has opened for a mile. What confirmation of our hopes is in the fragrance of this flower! I shall not so soon despair of the world for it, notwithstanding slavery, and the cowardice and want of principle of Northern men. It suggests what kind of laws have prevailed longest and widest, and still prevail, and that the time may come when man's deeds will smell as sweet. Such is the odor which the plant emits. If Nature can compound this fragrance still annually, I shall believe her still young and full of vigor, her integrity and genius unimpaired, and that there is virtue even in man, too, who is fitted to perceive and love it. It reminds me that Nature has been partner to no Missouri Compromise. I scent no compromise in the fragrance of the water-lily. It is not a Nymphoea Douglasii.2 In it, the sweet, and pure, and innocent are wholly sundered from the obscene and baleful. I do not scent in this the time-serving irresolution of a Massachusetts Governor, nor of a Boston Mayor. So behave that the odor of your actions may enhance the general sweetness of the atmosphere, that when we behold or scent a flower, we may not be reminded how inconsistent your deeds are with it; for all odor is but one form of advertisement of a moral quality, and if fair actions had not been performed, the lily would not smell sweet. The foul slime stands for the sloth and vice of man, the decay of humanity; the fragrant flower that springs from it, for the purity and courage which are immortal.

(3) Slavery and servility have produced no sweet-scented flower annually, to charm the senses of men, for they have no real life: they are merely a decaying and a death, offensive to all healthy nostrils. We do not complain that they live, but that they do not get buried. Let the living bury them: even they are good for manure.

1The Fugitive Slave Act was passed by the United States Congress in 1850. It required that all escaped slaves were returned to their masters even if they were discovered in a free state. Assisting or helping hide fugitive slaves became a federal offense with prison time and fines.

2A reference to Senator Stephen A. Douglas, the primary author of the Compromise of 1850, which included the Fugitive Slave Act. A water lily's botanical name is Nymphaea odorata.

The final sentence implies that (5 points)
the audience should turn the misdeeds of some into something good
the speaker has lost all hope in humanity's ability to care for others
slavery and, therefore, abolition efforts are coming to an end
lawmakers are justified in their desire to protect slave owners

essay about everything is gift

Answers

Answer:

Explanation:

Everything is a Gift

Life is full of surprises and unexpected moments. We often come across events, situations and people that make us feel grateful for the life we have. It is easy to take for granted the many gifts that life has to offer, but in order to truly appreciate all that we have, we must recognize that everything is a gift.

When we look around us, we can see many things that are given to us. From the air we breathe and the food we eat to the family, friends, and experiences that make up the fabric of our lives, all of these things are gifts. We can also think of the gifts of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding that we receive, or the gifts of nature that provide us with strength, beauty, and comfort. All of these things are gifts, and they come to us in many forms.

When we look within ourselves, we can also recognize the gifts that life has given us. We can be thankful for the health and energy that allow us to pursue our dreams, for the courage and determination to keep going even when it is difficult, and for the ability to appreciate the good in our lives. These gifts come from within and provide us with the capacity to live our lives with purpose and meaning.

In addition to recognizing the gifts of life, we can also be thankful for the challenges and difficulties that we face. These obstacles can help us to recognize our strength and resilience, and they can teach us valuable lessons about ourselves and the world around us. When we face our challenges with an open heart and a grateful spirit, we can find strength and joy in the midst of them.

In conclusion, it is important to remember that everything is a gift. Whether it is something that we receive from the outside world or something that we find within ourselves, we can be thankful for all of the gifts that life has given us. If we take the time to recognize and appreciate these gifts, we can find joy and meaning in the everyday moments of our lives.

"Remembering to Never Forget: Dominican Republic's 'Parsley Massacre’” by Mark Memmott:

Seventy-five years ago, thousands of Haitians were murdered in the Dominican Republic by a brutal dictator. It was one of the 20th Century's least-remembered acts of genocide.

As many as 20,000 people are thought to have been killed on orders given by Rafael Trujillo. But the "parsley massacre" went mostly unnoticed outside Hispaniola. Even there, many Dominicans never knew about what happened in early October 1937. They were kept in the dark by Trujillo's henchmen.

"A Genetics of Justice” by Julia Alvarez:

During my early teen years in this country, I knew very little about what was actually going on in the Dominican Republic. Whenever Ia situación on the island came up, my parents spoke in hushed voices. In December 1960, four months after our arrival, Time magazine reported the murder of the three Mirabal sisters, who along with their husbands had started the national underground Dominican Republic. My parents confiscated the magazine. To our many questions about what was going on, my mother always had the ready answer, "En boca cerrada no entran moscas." No flies fly into a closed mouth. Later, I found out that this very saying had been scratched on the lintel of the entrance of the SIM's torture center at La Cuarenta.

Which statement best compares how the two authors address this topic?

Memmott writes well after the events occurred, while Alvarez writes while the events are occurring.
Memmott tells about one event that occurred, while Alvarez tells about the dictatorship as a whole.
Memmott gives an anecdote to tell about the dictatorship’s cruelty, while Alvarez tells about her family.

an expository essay on Nigeria as a subject of civilian government and military government

Answers

Checked with grammerly

Americans, born in a nation with guaranteed human rights and the privilege to be free, may have difficulty understanding that there are certain countries in which citizens mistrust their governments. But the unfortunate truth is that countless nations suffer from corrupt leaders and systems, forcing the people to fend for themselves in all situations. Among the cruelest of these countries is Nigeria.  Nigeria has been fraught with hardship ever since its independence, but the situation was especially destructive during one particular regime beginning in 1993. Under the rule of dictator Sani Abacha, Nigeria experienced its most horrific period of human rights abuses and corruption, leading to domestic unrest and international uproar.

Nigeria has been a country in political turmoil for a long time. The country was created in 1914 under British colonial rule and at that time it was considered a protectorate. It was not until 1960 that Nigeria received independence from the United Kingdom. One of Nigeria's problems politically is that it has over three hundred different ethnic groups. The three largest of these are the Hausa-Fulani, Igbo, and Yoruba. At the time of the independence of Nigeria, it was split up into three states with each state being under the control of one of the major ethnic groups. The natural resources of the other 297 ethnic groups were exploited for the major three groups, creating a situation of political unrest. This resulted in a military coup d'etat throwing out the Prime Minister and replacing him with a major Igbo General. The minorities wanted a political restructuring through states and they won. There was an Igbo secession from Nigeria forming Biafra in Eastern Nigeria including the Ogoni territory. A three-year civil war broke out after this over the natural resources held by the minorities especially the oil in the Ogoni territory. After this Nigeria went through several forms of Military governments and a public election in 1993 was considered null and void by Gen. Babangida, he was taken over by Gen. Abacha in 1993 who was to be by far the most horrid dictator of Nigeria yet.

The plight of the Ogoni people has been heard around the world, they number around 500,000 and live in an area very rich in crude oil. Shell and other companies have drilling operations in the Ogoni territory but Shell is by far the major extractor of oil in the region. Due to the drilling and spillage of massive amounts of oil the ecosystem of the Ogoni people has been devastated. It resembles a wasteland with little to no vegetation and wildlife being very scarce. Furthermore, the Ogoni people have received almost nothing for all the oil exported from their land. An estimated 10 billion dollars a year is earned for the Nigerian government most of which is embezzled by high-ranking officials or put into the military to keep the population oppressed.
