But my disease grew upon me—for what disease is like Alcohol!—and at length even Pluto, who was now becoming old, and consequently somewhat peevish—even Pluto began to experience the effects of my ill temper.

The most obvious difference between the two pieces is that "Pluto's Plea" is written from the cat's perspective, whereas "The Black Cat" is written from the abuser's perspective. Although they both tell of the same events (a man's fall into substance abuse), Poe's text seems somewhat detached, or perhaps a bit calloused. This can be seen in how matter of fact he discusses his violent acts. The punctuation and vocabulary in James' piece reflects earnestness and pain, a far more visceral manner of describing the events.
