Romeo And Juliet, Act 4 Scene 1Can You Think Of A Better Plan Than The One That The Friar Came Up With?

Answers

Answer 1

A better plan that the Friar could have come up with was calling the families together and trying to reach a resolution with them.

A better plan by the Frair

When Juliet had come to the friar to suggest a solution to the problem that she and Romeo were facing, the Friar gave her a potion to drink and this makes Romeo think that she was actually dead.

This then led to a series of ugly results. Instead of giving Juliet a potion to drink, the Friar could have simply discussed the matter with the families.

As evidenced in Scene 2, in old times (and even now in some cultures) when a man was interested in marrying a woman he approached her father about the matter (often even before consulting the woman). Do you think there may be some value in couples getting married this way? Why or why not?

Answers

In traditional cultures, the practice of a man approaching a woman's father to ask for her hand in marriage was a way of showing respect and seeking approval from the woman's family. This practice is still followed in some cultures today.

How to explain the information

However, in modern times, this practice is not as common as before. Many people view it as outdated and unnecessary, as individuals have the right to make their own decisions about marriage.

There are both advantages and disadvantages to this practice. On the one hand, seeking the father's approval may help to build a good relationship with the family and create a sense of unity and respect between the two families. On the other hand, this practice may be seen as patriarchal and limiting the woman's agency in the decision-making process.

Read "On Women's Right to Vote," a speech given by Susan B. Antony after she was arrested for voting in the 1872 presidential election. Then, respond to the question that follows.

Friends and fellow citizens: I stand before you tonight under indictment for the alleged crime of having voted at the last presidential election, without having a lawful right to vote. It shall be my work this evening to prove to you that in thus voting, I not only committed no crime, but, instead, simply exercised my citizen's rights, guaranteed to me and all United States citizens by the National Constitution, beyond the power of any state to deny.

The preamble of the Federal Constitution says:

"We, the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."

It was we, the people; not we, the white male citizens; nor yet we, the male citizens; but we, the whole people, who formed the Union. And we formed it, not to give the blessings of liberty, but to secure them; not to the half of ourselves and the half of our posterity, but to the whole people -women as well as men. And it is a downright mockery to talk to women of their enjoyment of the blessings of liberty while they are denied the use of the only means of securing them provided by this democratic-republican government—the ballot.

For any state to make sex a qualification that must ever result in the disfranchisement of one entire half of the people, is to pass a bill of attainder, or, an ex post facto law, and is therefore a violation of the supreme law of the land.

By it the blessings of liberty are forever withheld from women and their female posterity.

To them this government has no just powers derived from the consent of the governed. To them this government is not a democracy. It is not a republic. It is an odious aristocracy; a hateful oligarchy of sex; the most hateful aristocracy ever established on the face of the globe; an oligarchy of wealth, where the rich govern the poor. An oligarchy of learning, where the educated govern the ignorant, or even an oligarchy of race, where the Saxon rules the African, might be endured; but this oligarchy of sex, which makes father, brothers, husband, sons, the oligarchs over the mother and sisters, the wife and daughters, of every household—which ordains all men sovereigns, all women subjects, carries dissension, discord, and rebellion into every home of the nation.

Webster, Worcester, and Bouvier all define a citizen to be a person in the United States, entitled to vote and hold office.

The only question left to be settled now is: Are women persons? And I hardly believe any of our opponents will have the hardihood to say they are not. Being persons, then, women are citizens; and no state has a right to make any law, or to enforce any old law, that shall abridge their privileges or immunities.

In Susan B. Anthony's speech "On Women's Right to Vote," she effectively utilizes the rhetorical appeal of logos and the rhetorical device of irony to argue for women's suffrage.

Logos, or logical appeal, is evident when Anthony cites the preamble of the Federal Constitution, stating that it was "we, the whole people," who formed the Union, not just men. By using the Constitution as evidence, she presents a logical argument for the inclusion of women in the democratic process. Additionally, Anthony employs irony when she highlights the contradiction between women's enjoyment of the blessings of liberty while being denied the right to vote. The use of irony emphasizes the absurdity of the situation and helps to further persuade her audience of the injustice faced by women. Together, the combination of logos and irony in her speech strengthens Anthony's argument for women's right to vote and highlights the need for gender equality in the United States.
This use of irony highlights the hypocrisy of a government that claims to promote democracy and liberty, yet denies women their basic rights as citizens.

For example, I propose that we add more opportunities for students to explore cross-cultural experiences, as these types of experiences have demonstrated to enhance understanding and respect for other cultures.
