In plays, speeches, and literary works, verbal irony occurs when a character says something that is radically at odds with the circumstances as they actually are. Contrary to dramatic and situational irony, verbal irony is used on purpose by the speaker.

For instance:

A woman stumbles down the steps while shouting, "I'm not harmed!" and making every effort to cover up her accident. There is no verbal irony in this.

When a woman falls down the steps, she exclaims, "I'm not hurt!" even if she is indeed hurt. This is irony in speech.

The two words that are obsolete or have changed in meaning since the founding of Plymouth are "inacomodate" and "carrage".

B. The word "inacomodate" was used in William Bradford's History of Plymouth Plantation to refer to the inability to make oneself comfortable. This is an obsolete use of the word as today it is used to describe someone or something that is unable to accommodate or provide for the needs of another.

The word "carrage" was used in the same text to describe a form of transport for goods, which is a much more general term for what we today would call a carriage or cart.

While the use of the word today is still similar, it is much more specific than the original use of the word, i.e. a vehicle used to transport goods. The original meaning is thus obsolete and has been replaced by more specific terms.

write an essay analyzing how arthur milller constructs an argument regarding ccarthyism in the crucible

Answers

Essay on Arthur Miller and the way he builds an argument about Chartism in the crucible.

In Arthur Miller's play The Crucible, he constructs an argument about McCarthyism by using the Salem Witch Trials as a metaphor for the paranoia and fear of the time. Miller shows how those accused of being a witch were quickly labeled as such and then were assumed to be guilty until proven innocent. This is similar to how McCarthyism was used to label anyone who was suspected of being a communist or associated with communism as guilty until proven innocent.

Miller also uses the characters in The Crucible to illustrate his point that when one group is persecuted and accused of something they may or may not have done, it can lead to a culture of fear and distrust of anyone who is different or who holds different beliefs.

Miller also shows how, during the Salem Witch Trials, people were so afraid of being persecuted that they resorted to lying or accusing others in order to save themselves. This is similar to the way people during McCarthyism could be so afraid of being accused of being a communist that they would lie about their beliefs or accuse others in order to protect themselves. Miller illustrates this point through the character of Abigail, who lies in order to save herself and encourages others to do the same.

Finally, Miller uses the character of John Proctor to show that it is possible to stand up against authority and to choose to do the right thing even when it comes at a great personal cost. Proctor's decision to confess to his adultery in order to save his wife from being accused of witchcraft is reflective of the courage of those in the McCarthy era who chose to stand up against McCarthyism despite the potential consequences.

Why did Jim and Della give each other a gift?

Answers

In order to show how much they cared for one other, Della and Jim sold their prized items to pay for Christmas gifts for each other.

Why do Jim and Della's presents to one another have lost their purpose?

In O. Henry's story "The Gift of the MAGI", Della sells her hair so Jim can buy a chain for his pocket watch, and Jim sells his pocket watch so Della can buy some fancy hair combs. At the conclusion of the narrative, Jim sells his watch to buy a chain for Della, and Della buys combs for her hair from Della after she trims and sells her hair.

Both of them desired to get a valuable item that the other should also own. A classic instance of irony can be seen as each character makes a choice of their desire to locate the ideal present, but the sacrifice makes each gift useless.
