My Last Roller Skating Party

In an effort to relive the good old days of youth, my friend Tim decided to throw himself a 1980s-themed party at a roller skating rink. All my college friends were going, and we decided to dress for the theme, complete with headbands, leg warmers, blue eyeshadow, and teased hair. The night of the party, everyone looked great and we all had a good time.

Then I decided to show off. About ten minutes before the party ended, I started trying moves I learned long ago when I dreamed of being an Olympic figure skater. I actually had never been good enough on the ice to get anywhere near the Olympics, but I loved skating and was pretty decent at one point. There I was at the party, spinning, twirling, and skating backward. Then I decided to bring my friend Heidi in on the fun, so I grabbed her hands and pulled her along with me as I skated backward. I was smart enough to be looking behind me to make sure I wouldn’t bump into anyone, but I was not smart enough to pay attention to my balance, which I lost.

I fell down onto the newly buffed rink floor. Before I knew what was happening, Heidi tripped and fell on top of me, and I heard a crack. I remember feeling the wind get knocked out of me, and then a rush of faces looking down asking if I was okay. My friend Kathleen, who was studying to be a nurse, asked questions to make sure I wasn’t seriously injured, and another friend called an ambulance. Since I was not yet feeling any pain, the sheer embarrassment of the moment was my main focus.

In the hospital I learned that I had broken a rib and fractured my collarbone. Kathleen had come with and assured me that I was lucky: it could have been much worse. Looking back, I have to laugh at the reaction we got from the hospital staff. Every time a new doctor or nurse walked into my room, we felt the need to explain our getups. The explanation was generally met with blank stares from people who had much more pressing concerns than what the girl in Room 3 was wearing.

I went home with strict instructions to move as little as possible for the next few weeks. Lucky for me, I was on summer break so I didn’t have to worry about school. I’d been planning to stay in my off-campus apartment and work that summer. Instead, I took a leave of absence from my job, formed a stack of books I’d been meaning to read for ages, and settled in for what would surely be some of the most boring weeks of my life. The next day, Heidi called and apologized profusely for falling on me. I thanked her but pointed out that it had been my fault that I ended up getting hurt.

“Even so, we all feel terrible that you ended up in the hospital at the end of a great party,” Heidi said. “Listen, I called a bunch of people who were there and asked if they wanted to volunteer for a meal drop-off schedule. I have your breakfast, lunch, and dinner covered for the next three weeks.” I needed a moment to process what Heidi was telling me. Next to my stack of books was a stack of menus from which I’d planned to order all of my food for the next few weeks. The thought of an all-fast food diet had made me a little nauseous, but I knew I wouldn’t be able to cook. Now my friends were coming to my rescue.

Starting the next morning, in addition to bringing amazing home-cooked meals, as well as some great take-out, my friends took turns visiting me so I didn’t get lonely. Those weeks ended up flying by. Before I knew it I was up and about again.

Eventually, my friends let me in on what a good laugh they had the night of the party – once they knew I was going to be all right, of course. As soon as my rib and collarbone healed I had a pretty good laugh about it, too. I didn’t mind that they had laughed. I decided that any group of friends willing to cook for me during summer break was allowed to laugh at me.

Which excerpt from the story supports the inference that the narrator was not planning to ask for any help during her recovery?

“I thanked her but pointed out that it had been my fault that I ended up getting hurt.”

My face was red and i was close to tears, my brother quickly grabbed me and pulled me to school. I was a little relieved but that quickly went away when those boys followed us, their slurs had turned into threats. One pulled a knife out of his pocket, the others cheered him on. As he ran to me and my brother, knife at the ready, i screamed for my brother to run. Picking myself up, I ran for an abandoned house. I didn’t look back until i heard a scream. I was already in the upstairs of the house, i ran back downstairs to see the boy on the table with a knife in his stomach. My brother stood over him staring at his bloody hands. What are some of the particular ways that the Wife of Bath addresses themes of
injustice?
How does she perceive fairness and unfairness, and how does she handle things
that she sees as unfair?
What can we learn about her character overall from considering this theme?

Answers

The correct answer to this open question is the following.

What are some of the particular ways that the Wife of Bath addresses themes of injustice?

The particular ways in which the Wife of Barth addresses these topics are from the perspective of a woman that sees things differently than the way established by society. Remember that the setting of the story is in the late Middle Ages, the medieval times in which the role of a woman was very discrete, behind the presence of the husband.

How does she perceive fairness and unfairness, and how does she handle things that she sees as unfair?

What she does is expressing her desire to be in charge, to be trusted. This behavior would give her the opportunity to choose right from wrong. And in the end, this is what women want: to be trusted, to be in charge, to make their own decisions, and know what is fair or not.

What can we learn about her character overall from considering this theme?

That people want to be trusted the way they are. Nobody likes to be in the shadow of another person. Everybody deserves to make their own decisions and having to decide what is fair and want is not. People like to be in charge of their own destiny, not at another person's whims.

"The Wife of Bath's Tale" is one of the famous stories included in the book "The Canterbury Tales, " written by Geoffrey Chaucer from 1387 to 1400.

The Prince Waits

The Prince of the Gold Portal sat cross-legged on a comfortable patch of long grass at the very lip of the glass-clear pond, in which silver and orange carp swam back and forth in idle, silent groups. Where was his tea, he wondered? He looked around to see whether the servants were arriving with the longed-for cup of steaming liquid. Dipping his fingers languidly into the cool pond, he delicately plucked out an oval-shaped purple leaf with fine-toothed edges, then let it drop so he could capture a newer one, a larger, brilliantly red leaf whose crinkled surface curled like the palm of a hand. Behind him, at the edge of the wide, sloping lawn, the tall, green fronds of bamboo waved, as mild as grazing sheep, and the politely clicking melody of wooden wind chimes wafted from the weathered pine balcony of his twelve-bedroom cottage. He would write a poem, he decided, for the leaf-watching festival, the Emperor’s favorite week of the year. A poem, perhaps about the bare slopes of Mount Atu, and a lone climber struggling up the mountainside as a late spring snow began to cover his shoulders. I am that climber, he thought, remembering the recent power struggles at the palace.

All the nobles and royals of the court would be present at the poetry reading contest, returning from their summer retreats to begin the excitement of the new social season. Cranes would fly picturesquely across the face of the full moon; toy paper boats carrying small-flamed candles would drift like glad-eyed children on the palace’s artificial lake. Sighing with expectation, the prince inhaled deeply the thin, tickling tang of pine-needle incense. Yes, the Emperor would approve of his poem, and perhaps grant him an honor such as the green sash of the Keeper of the Park! Our civilization, the prince thought, has reached a glorious peak.

How does this passage convey a sense of the time during which the scene occurs?

It specifies that the poem will be about a late spring snow.

It mentions a full moon, cranes, and toy boats floating on a stream.

It shows the prince's thoughts about certain events.

It describes objects in nature that indicate the season.

The basic look and shape of American houses and business places haven't changed much for a long time. Now, however, energy and
environmental challenges are encouraging new building materials, new ways to design buildings, and new respect for nature.
How would Mother Nature design a building?
Through 4 billion years of evolution, organisms have come up with some neat designs. Architects are beginning to look to nature for clues
to building sustainability
Perhaps most famous among biologically informed buildings is the Eastgate shopping center and office building in Harare, Zimbabwe. The
design was inspired by African termite mounds, where termites maintain a constant temperature of 87 degrees (to preserve a fungus that they
cultivate to eat) by opening and closing flues that vent hot air.
The concrete Eastgate building has no air-conditioning system. During the night, big fans draw cool outside air up through spaces between
the building's floors. During the day, smaller fans drive the warmer outside air through the same spaces, where the cool concrete moderates the
temperature. As the air warms, it rises through 48 round brick funnels and out the roof. Fresh air circulates through the building twice an hour
during the day. The building reportedly uses only 10 percent of the energy that a conventional building of the same size would use.
How about building materials inspired by nature? Architects and engineers are looking at the almost indestructible conch shell.
A conch grows itself by assembling bits of calcium carbonate into sheets and layers. It adds each new bit at a right angle to the finished bit.

Which sentence should be added to the end of paragraph 3 to support the ideas in the paragraph?
Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is a wilderness area in Montana. The park covers over one million acres. The park is open year-round and more than two million people visit each year. The terrain in the park varies from tall mountains to flat prairies.
The mountains in Glacier National Park are part of the Rocky Mountain range. They were formed long ago when tectonic plates below the earth's surface collided and caused the land to rise. These mountains are now home to animals such as bighorn sheep, marmots, and mountain goats. There are numerous types of trees near the base of most of the mountains, but the numbers and types of trees decrease as the elevation of the mountains increases. Visitors to the mountains can hike on the trails in the summertime and cross-country ski on the slopes in the wintertime.
In contrast to the high mountaintops, the prairies in Glacier National Park are found in low to mid-elevation areas. These wide, open spaces contain a variety of plants and animals. Wildflowers dot the landscape. Elk and prairie dogs roam the land. Visitors can go on a horseback ride or stay overnight at a campground.
