The Mid-Atlantic Ridge is the plate barrier that causes earthquakes between South America and Africa. Two tectonic plates are moving apart along the divergent plate boundary known as the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. Two of the many plates that make up the crust of the Earth are the African Plate and the South American Plate. As these plates drift apart, magma rises to fill the space and solidifies, forming new crust. As the plates move and rub against one another, a process known as seafloor spreading can result in earthquakes.
