TARGET WRITING LEVEL: Advanced In O. Henry's "The Gift of the Magi" Madame Sofronie is a flat, static character who owns a hair shop and is simply described as "large, too white, [and] chilly." Madame Sofronie is a direct, to-the-point, businesswoman who buys Della's hair for twenty dollars and is never seen in the story again. Write a short story that changes Madame Sofronie into a round, dynamic character by describing events, adding dialogue, and including some conflict to reveal her character. Types of Characterization: 1. Round a complex character about whom MUCH is known...they typically have both positive and negative traits which make them more relatable to readers - SUBMIT
2. Flat a one-dimensional character about whom LITTLE is known...they typically lack depth and development.
Madame Sofronie was a large, pale woman who ran her own hair shop in the heart of the city. She had a reputation for being cold and unyielding in her business dealings, but behind her icy exterior was a kind and generous heart.
One day, a young woman named Della walked into Madame Sofronie's shop. She was desperate for money and had decided to sell her long, beautiful hair to raise the funds she needed. Madame Sofronie was moved by Della's plight and offered her twenty dollars for her hair, far more than she would have received anywhere else.
Della was overjoyed and thanked the Madame for her generosity. However, Madame Sofronie soon realized that she was not alone in her kindness. Della had sold her hair to buy a gift for her beloved husband. This realization filled Madame Sofronie with sadness and regret, for she had no one to share such an act of love with.
Madame Sofronie quickly composed herself and thanked Della again for the beautiful hair. As Della left the shop, Madame Sofronie was reminded of her own loneliness, but also of the power of love. She vowed to never forget the lesson she had learned that day, and to be more generous with herself and others.
The story presents Madame Sofronie from 'The Gift of the Magi' as a dynamic, round character, adding depth and complexity to her profile. It reflects on character development and conflict, narrating how Sofronie's interaction with Della spurs change in her business practice by tapping into her past experiences, stirring empathy and guilt.
Explanation:In O. Henry's classic story, "The Gift of the Magi", Madame Sofronie is presented as a brief, one-dimensional character. In the interest of expanding her character, consider the following reinterpretation:
Madame Sofronie, a severe woman with a veneer of coldness, ran the hair shop with a strict capitalist mindset. However, she carried a buried, complex backstory. Her aloofness was born from past struggles, fighting her way up in an industry dominated by men.
On the day that Della visited, something in the desperate young woman stirred a long-forgotten empathy within Sofronie. She looked at the beautiful hair, knew its real worth, and steadied her gaze on Della. "Twenty dollars," she said stiffly. But after Della left, she sighed, gazing at the strands. A wave of regret washed over her. She’d made her fortune exploiting desperation like Della’s. This realization sparked a change in her. She became determined to change the course of her business and help those young girls in the same way she wished she had been helped.

What is the writer's situation? What is his world like at the beginning of the tale? Why is his world this way?
Answer: In "Learning to Read," the writer's situation is that he is a prisoner serving a sentence in prison. His world at the beginning of the tale is one of illiteracy and limited access to education. He is unable to read and write and feels at a disadvantage in comparison to his fellow inmates who are better educated. His world is this way because of the lack of educational opportunities available to him during his childhood and young adulthood, particularly as a black man in America during the time period in which the story takes place. The societal and systemic discrimination he faced likely contributed to his lack of access to education.

Answer:
Explanation:
Everything is a Gift
Life is full of surprises and unexpected moments. We often come across events, situations and people that make us feel grateful for the life we have. It is easy to take for granted the many gifts that life has to offer, but in order to truly appreciate all that we have, we must recognize that everything is a gift.
When we look around us, we can see many things that are given to us. From the air we breathe and the food we eat to the family, friends, and experiences that make up the fabric of our lives, all of these things are gifts. We can also think of the gifts of knowledge, wisdom, and understanding that we receive, or the gifts of nature that provide us with strength, beauty, and comfort. All of these things are gifts, and they come to us in many forms.
When we look within ourselves, we can also recognize the gifts that life has given us. We can be thankful for the health and energy that allow us to pursue our dreams, for the courage and determination to keep going even when it is difficult, and for the ability to appreciate the good in our lives. These gifts come from within and provide us with the capacity to live our lives with purpose and meaning.
In addition to recognizing the gifts of life, we can also be thankful for the challenges and difficulties that we face. How would you expect students at a public school to treat their books and other school property? How would that differ at a school in which students purchase their own books and materials for school?
Read the passage from the opinion of the court in Brown v. Board of Education, written by Justice Warren.
In the instant cases, that question is directly presented. . . . There are findings below that the Negro and white schools involved have been equalized, or are being equalized, with respect to buildings, curricula, qualifications and salaries of teachers, and other "tangible" factors. Our decision, therefore, cannot turn on merely a comparison of these tangible factors in the Negro and white schools involved in each of the cases. We must look instead to the effect of segregation itself on public education. . . .
Today, education is perhaps the most important function of state and local governments. Compulsory school attendance laws and the great expenditures for education both demonstrate our recognition of the importance of education to our democratic society. It is required in the performance of our most basic public responsibilities, even service in the armed forces. It is the very foundation of good citizenship. Today it is a principal instrument in awakening the child to cultural values, in preparing him for later professional training, and in helping him to adjust normally to his environment. In these days, it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of an education. Such an opportunity, where the state has undertaken to provide it, is a right which must be made available to all on equal terms.
We come then to the question presented: Does segregation of children in public schools solely on the basis of race, even though the physical facilities and other "tangible" factors may be equal, deprive the children of the minority group of equal educational opportunities? We believe that it does.
. . . To separate them from others of similar age and qualifications solely because of their race generates a feeling of inferiority as to their status in the community that may affect their hearts and minds in a way unlikely ever to be undone.
What reason does Warren give for making the claim that comparing "tangible factors” is not enough to evaluate segregation?
A)Educational and physical facilities themselves are not actually equal.
B)The state has promised to provide equal educational opportunities.
C)Age and qualifications in public schools are a more reliable factor to examine.
D)The real impact of racial segregation is emotional damage to minority students.
A reason that Warren gives for making the claim that comparing "tangible factors” is not enough to evaluate segregation is this:
D)The real impact of racial segregation is emotional damage to minority students.
What reason does Warren give? The reason that Warren gives to buttress the fact that comparing tangible factors is not enough to evaluate segregation is that he shows that segregation is a topic that is concerned more with emotional damage than physical damage. So, it was not reasonable to say that blacks have been made equal to whites simply because they now share the same tangible amenities.
A better way to gauge segregation is whether the emotional damage that some were meting out on others has been reasonably reduced. This was a better way because emotional damages seem to have deeper impacts when compared to physical damage.

Now decide: Which version did you like better, the text or the video? Share your choice with your classmates along with details from both versions that helped you decide.

Determine whether you prefer the text or video version of Twelfth Night and use details from both versions to explain your choice. You may focus on comparing or contrasting any aspect, such as setting, characters, plot, or tone, or a combination of aspects.
Include in your post a difference you perceived between the formats. How did each format affect your ability to imagine what was happening? How did each version appeal to your senses of sight and sound? Was there anything the live version could do that the written could not, or vice versa? For example, the play is performed before a live audience, so the audience’s reactions may have influenced your reaction or understanding.
Answer:
After comparing and contrasting the text and video versions of Act II of Twelfth Night, I have decided that I prefer the text version. One of the main reasons for my preference is the setting. In the text version, the setting is described in detail and creates a vivid imagery in my mind. The descriptions of the Duke's palace, the gardens, and the different rooms give me a clear understanding of the environment and atmosphere of the scene. On the other hand, in the video version, the setting is portrayed differently and while it still creates a sense of grandeur, it doesn't quite capture the same level of detail as the text.
Another aspect that I preferred in the text version was the characters. In the text, the characters are described and their motivations and emotions are clearly defined. I could understand the characters' personalities and the reasons behind their actions. In the video version, the actors portrayed the characters in a way that I found less convincing and their motivations were less clear.
The text version also allowed me to use my imagination more freely. The descriptions of the setting and characters allowed me to create my own mental images of what was happening. On the other hand, in the video version, everything is already shown to you, leaving less room for personal interpretation.
Lastly, the play is performed before a live audience, so the audience's reactions may have influenced my reaction or understanding. I found that it was harder for me to fully immerse myself in the story with the live audience and their reactions, as it was a distraction.
In conclusion, the text version allowed for a more vivid and personal experience for me, with a detailed setting and well-defined characters. While the video version was still enjoyable, it did not quite capture the same level of detail and imagination as the text version.

8. Write a news report on the opening of 25th branch of Shikhar Bank Limited in llam headquarters.
A report is a formal document that elaborates on a topic using data, charts, and graphs to support its arguments and results, according to the frequently accepted definition of report writing.
The report is as follows. An first evaluation of COVID-19's impact on the global labour market concludes that the impacts will be far-reaching, forcing millions into unemployment, underemployment, and working poverty, and offers steps for a decisive, coordinated, and rapid reaction.
Various situations
Based on several scenarios regarding the impact of COVID-19 on global GDP growth, the ILO anticipates a 5.3 million ("low") to 24.7 million ("high") increase in worldwide unemployment in 2019 from a base level of 188 million. In comparison, the global financial crisis of 2008-9 increased worldwide unemployment by 22 million people.
Underemployment is also likely to rise significantly as the economic ramifications of the viral spread result in reduced working hours and earnings.
Because of limits on the mobility of people (e.g., service providers) and commodities, self-employment in developing nations, which generally serves to buffer the impact of changes, may not do so this time.
Job losses result in significant income losses for workers. According to the analysis, these will range from USD 860 billion to USD 3.4 trillion by the end of 2020. This will result in decreased consumption of products and services, harming corporate and economic prospects.
Working poverty is predicted to expand dramatically too, since "the impact on earnings resulting from the reduction in economic activity will decimate those close to or below the poverty line".
In comparison to the earlier projection for 2020, the ILO expects that between 8.8 and 35 million more people will be in working poverty worldwide (which projected a decline of 14 million worldwide).
Policy responses must be swift and coordinated.
"This is no longer just a worldwide health catastrophe; it is also a serious labour market and economic disaster with far-reaching consequences for people," said ILO Director-General Guy Ryder. "In 2008, the globe showed a united front to handle the implications of the global financial crisis, and the worst was avoided. "We need that type of leadership and determination right now," he continued.
The ILO paper cautions that the jobs crisis would disproportionately affect particular groups, thereby increasing inequality.
