The part "By making my wants few." explains to us that Thoreau is making his needs less important, because he knows that the things that he needs and the things that he wants, will cost money.
In Conclusion, Thoreau is keeping his needs and wants to a certain level, and by doing this he has nothing to pay for, making that money he has, quite alot, because he uses the word "rich."
