However, the learning mechanisms and the factors that influence them are still poorly understood. This PhD study aims to shed some light on the underlying mechanisms of learning L2 phonemes and the effects of age. Three perceptual training studies were conducted with Japanese speakers who struggle with English /r/-/l/ contrast perception and production. The first study looked into whether training in identification and discrimination could help adults in Japan improve their perception and production. The findings demonstrated that while training in identification and discrimination improved their perception and production of the English /r/-/l/ contrast, training in combination did not have additive effects. The second study looked at how age affects how people learn the phonetic and phonological levels of perception of the English /r/-/l/ contrast. Due to their developed L1 phonetic units and relatively fossilized brain plasticity, the findings demonstrated that Japanese adults are disadvantaged in improving their phonetic perception of the English /r/-/l/ contrast. Younger students, on the other hand, are able to develop improved phonetic and phonological contrast perception. This could be because their brains are more malleable and less influenced by undeveloped L1 phonetic categories.
