Even after the man was freed, a furious mob of up to 200 people quickly surrounded the St. Roch District Police Station where he had been lodged. The conscription registration office and two pro-conscription publications in Quebec City were then looted by rioters.
The last and worst battle took place on Easter Monday when people united once more in opposition to the city's military presence, which by that point had increased to 1,200 troops. When the soldiers were told to open fire on the throng, the people scattered right away. Despite controversy about the precise number of civilian deaths, official records from that day list five males who were shot and died. Numerous others were hurt. 32 injuries were noted among the soldiers that day, but no fatalities. The Easter Riots, which resulted in over 150 fatalities and $300,000 in property damage, came to an end on Monday, April 1.
