This is a paragraph about two women who contributed to the American revolutionary war-

In both the American Revolution and the ensuing War for Independence, women played crucial roles. These women are regarded as Founding Mothers by historian Cokie Roberts. Politics was influenced by women like Mercy Otis Warren and Abigail Adams, the wife of Massachusetts Congressional Delegate John Adams. Abigail Adams famously and frequently wrote letters to her husband while he was in Philadelphia, urging him to "remember the women" in the new form of government or else they would start their own revolution. As politically astute as Adams, Warren was also a prolific writer and a dramatist in addition to capturing her observations of the events churning around Boston. She wrote in December 1774, four months before the conflict started at Lexington and Concord, expressing her fervent devotion to the cause of the patriotism, “America stands armed with resolution and virtue, but she still recoils at the idea of drawing the sword against the nation from whence she derived her origin”. In 1805 she published History of the Rise, Progress, and Termination of the American Revolution.

An independent clause contains a subject and verb, expresses a complete thought, and can stand on its own as a complete sentence.

A dependent clause contains a subject and verb but does not express a complete thought; it depends on being joined to an independent clause to form a complete sentence. Dependent clauses can often be recognized by a marker word at the beginning of the clause that signals a subordinate relationship with an independent clause.

Many sentence fragments are dependent clauses that have mistakenly been separated from the independent clauses they belong with.

Read the passage from Animal Farm.

Mr. Pilkington, of Foxwood, had stood up, his mug in his hand. In a moment, he said, he would ask the present company to drink a toast. But before doing so, there were a few words that he felt it incumbent upon him to say.

It was a source of great satisfaction to him, he said—and, he was sure, to all others present—to feel that a long period of mistrust and misunderstanding had now come to an end. There had been a time—not that he, or any of the present company, had shared such sentiments—but there had been a time when the respected proprietors of Animal Farm had been regarded, he would not say with hostility, but perhaps with a certain measure of misgiving, by their human neighbours. Unfortunate incidents had occurred, mistaken ideas had been current. It had been felt that the existence of a farm owned and operated by pigs was somehow abnormal and was liable to have an unsettling effect in the neighbourhood. Too many farmers had assumed, without due enquiry, that on such a farm a spirit of licence and indiscipline would prevail. They had been nervous about the effects upon their own animals, or even upon their human employees. But all such doubts were now dispelled. Today he and his friends had visited Animal Farm and inspected every inch of it with their own eyes, and what did they find? Not only the most up-to-date methods, but a discipline and an orderliness which should be an example to all farmers everywhere. He believed that he was right in saying that the lower animals on Animal Farm did more work and received less food than any animals in the county. Indeed, he and his fellow-visitors today had observed many features which they intended to introduce on their own farms immediately.

Nicki dashed up the shore and into the forest, not stopping
to think. She could feel the footsteps behind her, the
nameless thugs whose loyalties could be bought and sold
like sacks of sugar. Those men were fast; she hoped she
was faster. For the first time since her journey began, a
sliver of doubt entered Nicki's mind. Why did she start all
this in the first place? The doubt would follow her as the
men continued to chase her around the island. They were
unrelenting hounds. She was their timid prey.
Which statement best describes why the men chasing Nicki are examples of
flat characters?
OA. The men simply keep chasing Nicki, and their motivations are not
revealed.
OB. The men are conflicted about whether they should continue to
chase Nicki.
C. The men are unsure if they are faster than Nicki.
D. The men reveal that they are chasing Nicki because she stole
sugar from them.

Answers

Answer:

A.

Explanation:

The men continued to chase and the word unrelenting implies that they kept on chasing. Their intentions are not clear since Nicki herself did not know why they they were chasing her and we are not told anything about the men.

B can be eliminated since the men continued to chase

C can be eliminated since nothing is mentioned about the relative speeds of Nicki and the men

D. Sugar has nothing to do with the situation. It simply is a phrase that expresses the measure of the loyalties of the men since sacks of sugar are cheap

Select the correct text in the passage. Which two sentences best show how the third-person point of view contributes to a feeling of excitement and suspense in the passage? excerpt from Around the World in 80 Days by Jules Verne Phileas Fogg rightly suspected that his departure from London would create a lively sensation at the West End. The news of the quest spread and afforded an interesting topic of conversation to many. From the neighborhood, it soon got into the papers throughout England. The boasted "tour of the world" was talked about, disputed, argued with much warmth and passion. Some took sides with Phileas Fogg, but the large majority shook their heads and declared against him. “It was absurd, impossible,” they declared, “that the tour of the world could be made.” The Times, Standard, Morning Post, and Daily News, and twenty other highly respectable newspapers labeled Mr. Fogg's project as ridiculous. The way I would set the stage to show that a time shift had occurred between both scenes would be to make use of flashbacks.

What are Stage Directions?

This refers to the instructions in a play or drama about the movement of actors, their speech, etc.

Hence, we can see that based on the two scenes, we can see that the first scene which is set 3 years later than the first one has a disorganized setting and background while the second scene shows a well-ordered setting.

Therefore, the use of flashbacks would be necessary to show the time shift between the two.

Sharks' Teeth
By Langston Carter

The day we found the sharks' teeth was foggy and cool. Moisture hung in the air so thick you could almost see it sparkling in the dim sunlight. There were days, early in the summer like this one, where it seemed there was more water in the air than in the bay. We had beached the boat and stepped out on the recently cleared spit of land. The ground had a light dusting of white sand over an under layer of dried black mud. It looked like a recently frosted chocolate cake, though the frosting was spread a bit thin for my taste. The ground was solid, but we knew from experience that it was full of fiddler crab holes, and would be underwater at the first super-high tide. Mysteriously, to us anyway, someone wanted to build a house there.

We often came to these spots to look for artifacts. Our beach, our summer home, had been a fishing camp for as long as anyone living could remember. The oldest stories told of travelers coming down to the edge of the sea, lining up to fill their wagon beds with salted fish to take back home. Old decaying cabins still lined the beach. Rotting nets, hung out to dry in the last century, decorated their weathered walls. Their broken faces spun stories in our minds. The fishermen who, tanned and wrinkled from sun and salt, hauled their nets full of splashing mullet in to cheers from the waiting crowds. The bounty of the sea lightened everyone's hearts, and the smell of roasting fish filled the damp air. Women fanned themselves from wagon seats. Children splashed in the shallow edges of the bay. It was a scene we had acted out as youngsters, building an imaginary bridge to a life we would never fully know.
