Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

Explanation:

Here are the three sentences that I would choose and why.

Japan has, therefore, undertaken a surprise offensive extending throughout the Pacific area. It was a huge surprise that everyone experienced on Dec. 7 1941. The whole speech is about that surprise. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory believe interpret the will of the Congress and of the people when assert that we will not only defend ourselves to the uttermost but will make very certain that this form of treachery shall never endanger us again Hostilities exist. I choose this one because it shows how determined Roosevelt was never to let this happen again. America will fight to see to that end. Look at some of the words treachery, righteous might, ask that the Congress declare that since the unprovoked and dastardly attack by Japan on Sunday, December Seventh, 1941, a state of war has existed between the United States and the Japanese Empire. Here Roosevelt is urging every American talk to congress through elected officials to back their heavy duty when they declare war on the Japanese Empire which he has already done.

More women have been hired at companies that do business with the government as a result of affirmative action policies over time.

Affirmative action policiesAffirmative action is a sort of policy used to give education and employment opportunities to racial and ethnic groups who have historically faced prejudice.Academics have studied how these activities contribute to the achievement of very significant social goals in both qualitative and quantitative ways. They are eradicating disparities in employment and income, expanding access to higher education, promoting diversity as a strength rather than a weakness, and righting apparent wrongs or injuries from the past.

Hence, over time, affirmative action policies have led to an increase in the number of women hired by businesses that work with the government.

We must abolish Daylight Saving Time. The practice of adjusting our clocks back in the fall and forward in the spring must not continue. First, studies show that eighty-eight per cent of all office workers have said that Daylight Saving Time makes them thirty-five per cent less productive. A policy so profoundly unpopular cannot possibly work for the good of society. Further, only wealthy capitalists promote Daylight Saving Time for their own self-serving needs. According to Karl Marx, the inventor of Marxism, the greed that these people demonstrate operates throughout society; thus, Daylight Saving Time can only help to support that greed. Finally, the fatigue that accompanies Daylight Saving Time causes such carelessness that it can only result in a plague of traffic accidents leading to severe injuries and perhaps even death. We must ask ourselves if death is worth the dubious benefits of this outdated course of action. In conclusion, the arguments I have presented demonstrate conclusively that the disastrous practice of Daylight Saving Time must end now.

Now that you've read the paragraph, look at it again. Consider how the writer argues his position. Especially, look for fallacies; you can use the video lecture or the list in the textbook to help you spot them.
Write a body paragraph of no less than three hundred (300) and no more than four hundred (400) words to respond to the sample paragraph. Which part of the excerpt best demonstrates that the author’s purpose is to entertain children with a humorous story?

Answers

Which part of the excerpt best demonstrates that the author’s purpose is to entertain children with a humorous story?

"In the sea, once upon a time, O my Best Beloved, there was a Whale, and he ate fishes. He ate the starfish and the garfish, and the crab and the dab, and the plaice and the dace, and the skate and his mate, and the mackereel and the pickereel, and the really truly twirly-whirly eel. All the fishes he could find in all the sea he ate with his mouth—so!"

"Till at last there was only one small fish left in all the sea, and he was a small ‘Stute Fish, and he swam a little behind the Whale’s right ear, so as to be out of harm’s way. Then the Whale stood up on his tail and said, ‘I’m hungry.’"

"And the small 'Stute Fish said in a small 'stute voice, ‘Noble and generous Cetacean, have you ever tasted Man?’ ‘No,’ said the Whale. ‘What is it like?’ ‘Nice,’ said the small 'Stute Fish. ‘Nice but nubbly.’ ‘Then fetch me some,’ said the Whale, and he made the sea froth up with his tail. ‘One at a time is enough,’ said the 'Stute Fish."

“If you swim to latitude Fifty North, longitude Forty West (that is magic), you will find, sitting on a raft, in the middle of the sea, with nothing on but a pair of blue canvas breeches, a pair of suspenders (you must not forget the suspenders, Best Beloved), and a jack-knife, one ship-wrecked Mariner, who, it is only fair to tell you, is a man of infinite-resource-and-sagacity.”"Till at last there was only one small fish left in all the sea, and he was a small ‘Stute Fish, and he swam a little behind the Whale’s right ear, so as to be out of harm’s way. Then the Whale stood up on his tail and said, ‘I’m hungry.’"

What is the story of  "Just So Stories"?

The excerpt is from Rudyard Kipling's "Just So Stories", a collection of origin stories for children. This collection of stories contain various tales of imaginary animals and how they came to be so and so.

The main title from which this excerpt is taken from is "How The Whale Got His Throat" where Kipling narrates an encounter between a whale and "a small ‘Stute Fish". As the whale had already eaten all of the fishes in the sea, the 'Stute Fish was all that's left, leaving the small fish to come up with some plan to escape being eaten by the whale. And in narrating this story, Kipling uses resonating rhymes that will engage the young reader, keeping them occupied and invested in the story. He depicts the animal characters in such a way that it catches the interest of the young readers, and helps them imagine how the animals are. Childish characterization of the animals, be it the whale or the small fish, and also using languages such as "really truly twirly-whirly eel" and he also makes the "Whale stood up on his tail", which all contributes to the imagination of the children.

And the best part of the excerpt that demonstrates his purpose of entertaining children is when he describes the small fish was the only one left to be eaten by the Whale. And "he was a small ‘Stute Fish, and he swam a little behind the Whale’s right ear, so as to be out of harm’s way. Then the Whale stood up on his tail and said, ‘I’m hungry.’"

Thus, option "D" is correct.
