When Nick first meets Catherine, in chapter 2, she tells him that neither Myrtle nor Tom can stand their spouses. She also said that Daisy refused to get a divorce because she was Catholic. Nick knew that both of these comments were lies. Nick knows she is lying again. Nick isn't willing to call Catherine on any of her lies. What does this tell us about Nick's character? What would you have done, if you were Nick?

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

This tells us that Nick is either afraid of her, or of ruining their relationship. Another reason why he might have not called her out on it is that he finds those things trivial and doesn't care enough. He doesn't want to call her out on it because it could hurt her feelings and cause her to be angry with him. If I were Nick, and if it was that important to me, I would have carefully asked her, but not outright or bluntly.

Discuss the idea of love during the renaissance based on the selections you read so far in this unit. Prepare for the discussion by briefly reviewing the poems by Wyatt, Spenser, Marlowe, Raleigh, Shakespeare, and Donne that you read throughout the unit. Then use these questions as a starting point for the discussion: How does their idea of love compare? What does each poem tell you about the idea of love in general during the renaissance?

The Poetry presents distinctive perspectives of Love: Shakespeare's sonnets donne's a valediction disallowing grieving and Johnson's melody to celia. No matter what she passed on, Johnson still cherishes her and emptied all his affection into his tune.

They also tell the reader what it is not: it does not "admit impediments", it is not susceptible to time and knows no distance. However, while both speak passionately about true love, what differentiates the two is the fact that the speaker in Donne's poem has experienced true love. Taken from Markedbyteachers.

They must also pool their economic resources through various cooperative enterprises. Such agencies as credit unions, savings and loan associations, and finance companies are needed in every Negro community. All of these are things that would serve to lift the economic level of the Negro which would in turn give him greater purchasing power. This increased purchasing power will inevitably make for better housing, better health standards, and for better educational standards.

Answer and Explanation:

Yes, because she is young. As a young character, she can encourage other girls around her age, or even above, to fight for their rights. Because young characters can influence other people to take action and react against adverse situations they may be experiencing. This is because these characters show that it is possible for a person with little age and few experiences to cause great transformations not only in the community itself, but worldwide. This also encourages older people, who understand that if such an unexpected person can promote such beneficial situations, they, who have more wisdom and are experienced, can promote even more beneficial situations.

Explanation:

Since the text said, " Perhaps he'll try to throw his pillow at me again..." I don't think it is C because it's not introducing. It may be D, but with this context, I wouldn't think so. With answer B, the person talking is not with anyone, as I can tell.

Excerpt from Stuff Matters

By Mark Miodownik

In the absence of copper, gold, and meteoric iron, our ancestors’ tools during the Stone Age were made of flint, wood, and bone. Anyone who has ever tried to make anything with these kinds of tools knows how limiting they are: if you hit a piece of wood it either splinters, cracks, or snaps. The same is true of rock or bone. Metals are fundamentally different from these other materials because they can be hammered into shape: they flow, they are malleable. Not only that, they get stronger when you hit them; you can harden a blade just by hammering it. And you can reverse the process simply by putting metal in a fire and heating it up, which will cause it to get softer. The first people to discover these properties ten thousand years ago had found a material that was almost as hard as a rock but behaved like a plastic and was almost infinitely reusable. In other words, they had discovered the perfect material for tools, and in particular cutting tools like axes, chisels, and razors. This ability of metals to transform from a soft to a hard material must have seemed like magic to our ancient ancestors.

***

In 1961 Professor Richmond from Oxford University discovered a pit that had been dug by the Romans in AD 89. It contained 763,840 small two-inch nails, 85,128 medium nails, 25,088 large nails, and 1,344 extra-large sixteen-inch nails. The hoard was of iron and steel and not gold, which most people would have found bitterly disappointing. But not Professor Richmond. Why, he asked himself, would a Roman legion bury seven tons of iron and steel? The legion had been occupying the advance headquarters of Agricola in a place called Inchtuthil in Scotland. This was at the outer reaches of the Roman Empire, and their mission was to protect its border from what they saw as the savage tribes who threatened it: the Celts. The legion of five thousand men occupied the region for six years before retreating and, in the process, abandoning their fort. They made great efforts to leave behind nothing that could help their enemies. They smashed all food and drink containers and burned the fort to the ground. But they weren’t satisfied with this. In the ashes were the steel nails that had held the fort together, and they were far too valuable to be left to the tribes that had driven them out. Iron and steel were the materials that enabled the Romans to build aqueducts, ships, and swords; they allowed them to engineer an empire. Leaving the nails to their enemies would have been as useful as leaving a cache of weapons, so they buried them in a pit before marching south.
The reader can infer that the discovery of metal –

a) changed the face of hunting.

B) happened as an accident.

c) was the greatest discovery of all time.

d) changed humanity forever.

Answers

Answer:

D. hanged humanity forever.

Explanation:

According to the excerpt from Stuff Matters by Mark Miodownik, it is narrated that in the Stone Age, our ancestors made use of flint, wood and bone which were not reliable and malleable for use. However, metal was discovered which solved the earlier problem of using stones and bones for construction.

Metals were malleable and the process could be reversed by melting it. Therefore, the discovery of metal changed humanity forever.

D)The secret garden is a magical place

Answers

Answer:

b

Explanation:

k12

The best-developed theme in this passage is "The secret garden is a place for healing and growing." The correct option is B.

What is The Secret Garden about?

"The Secret Garden" is a novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, first published in 1911.

It tells the story of Mary Lennox, a young girl who is sent to live with her uncle in England after her parents die of cholera in India.

The passage emphasises Mary's perception of the garden as her sanctuary, or "nest," and how Dickon's message assures her that her secret garden will remain a safe and protected place.

The garden's description language, such as "healing" and "growing," emphasises nature's transformative power and the garden's ability to provide a sense of comfort and renewal.

The passage does not explicitly develop the themes of happiness being dependent on others' help, secrets being dangerous, or the secret garden being a magical place.

Thus, the correct option is B.

Which persuasive technique is present in this excerpt from a speech?

It is common knowledge that America consumes a lot of resources compared to the rest of the world. We need more gasoline, eat bigger meals, and drink from larger size cups. We waste a lot of what we purchase, and we buy many things we didn't need in the first place. In addition to a lack of public transportation, an abundance of plastic bags, and overuse of disposables, we have managed to do more than a nation's share in global warming.

Only the other day, while I was shopping in an outlet mall, I noticed that the store's doors were wide open while the air conditioning blasted and kept the place icy cold. The sales clerks cared more about the view outside than the tremendous amount of energy they were wasting. I wondered why the customers weren't bothered by the waste of energy. Why shouldn't we start thinking about alternative sources of energy? I asked the clothing store manager to close the doors. I also started to make a list of what I really needed, and I never shopped when I was very hungry.

What are some text-text connections in the play, Antigone and Icarus and Daedalus?

Answers

Answer:

Two examples of text-to-text connections between "Antigone" and "Icarus and Dedalus" are commitment to family and disobedience.

Explanation:

Text-to-text connections are observed when a text has an element that allows the reader to remember another text. Based on this, we can see two examples of text-to-text connections between "Antigone" and "Icarus and Daedalus". This is because in "Antigone" we can see how she is committed to the family, insisting that her brother have a dignified funeral; while in "Icarus and Daedalus" the commitment to the family is established in the effort of father and son to save themselves.

In addition, we can see disobedience as an example of text-text connections. That's because Icarus disobeys his father's orders not to fly near the sun, while Antigone disobeys the king's orders not to hold a funeral for her brother.
