Which examples of situational irony does Saki use to create satire? Select two options.

Bertha hopes that she will not be eaten by the wolf, but she is.

The wolf comes to the park to eat pigs but eats Bertha instead.

The children do not think that they are going to like the story, but they do.

The aunt wants the bachelor to learn his lesson, but she learns hers instead.

Bertha thinks that it is good to win medals for goodness, but the medals get her killed.

Answers

Answer 1

Answer:

I believe the examples that create satire through situational irony are:

D) The aunt wants the bachelor to learn his lesson, but she learns hers instead.

E) Bertha thinks that it is good to win medals for goodness, but the medals get her killed.

Explanation:

In literature, situational irony takes place when we are led to believe something will take place, but something else that's completely different is the result. It is a plot twist in which a character's actions are twisted into the opposite.

Among the options provided, there are two that represent situational irony in Saki's "The Storyteller". First, there is the aunt's intent to teach the bachelor a lesson. The aunt failed miserably at telling her nieces and nephew a story that was both entertaining and educative. When the bachelor criticizes her, she defies him by asking him to do a better job at telling the children a story. To her surprise and disappointment, he is successful. The children love his story. When the aunt criticizes the lack of moral lessons in it, the bachelor reveals he never intended to teach the kids anything. He just wanted them to be quiet for ten minutes.

Another situational irony concerns Bertha, the character in the bachelor's story, getting killed because of the medals. Bertha believed those medals were precious trophies of her impeccable behavior and goodness. They should, therefore, be a type of reward, something that would make her life better. Instead, their clanking noise is what attracts the wolf and reveals her hiding place.

As we can see, both the aunt's and Bertha's intents were twisted into their opposite, characterizing situational irony.

Answer 2

Situational irony is the type of irony in which the outcome of the action is opposite from the situation. The result of the situation is entirely different from what is expected.

The examples of situational irony that Saki used to create satire are:

D) The aunt wants the bachelor to learn his lesson, but she learns hers instead.

E) Bertha thinks that it is good to win medals for goodness, but the medals get her killed.

In the story "The Storyteller", the stranger tells the story to the children. His story builds interest in the mind of the children. The aunt thought that the stranger's story will not be accepted by the children and that he will understand by himself. But she later understands herself that children have enjoyed the story.

An another example of situational irony is the death of Bertha. Her medals became the reason of her death.

Read the excerpt from Mark Twain's "The £1,000,000 Bank-Note".

Well, I was perfectly honest and square with her; told her I hadn't a cent in the world but just the million-pound note she'd heard so much talk about, and it didn't belong to me, and that started her curiosity; and then I talked low, and told her the whole history right from the start, and it nearly killed her laughing. What in the nation she could find to laugh about I couldn't see, but there it was; every half-minute some new detail would fetch her, and I would have to stop as much as a minute and a half to give her a chance to settle down again. Why, she laughed herself lame--she did, indeed; I never saw anything like it. I mean I never saw a painful story--a story of a person's troubles and worries and fears--produce just that kind of effect before.

Which rhetorical device is demonstrated in the excerpt?

Answers

Answer:

The answer is hyperbole.

Explanation:

It's a familiar question.

Also, Hyperbole is an exaggeration. The most blatant display of exaggeration here is the author's description of her laughter.

The following lines show this:

"...and it nearly killed her laughing"

"...she laughed herself lame--she did, indeed;"

She couldn't have possibly laughed herself lame of course but the hyperbole is used in showing how hard she must have laughed at what he was telling her.

Read this informal outline of the passage section titled “Jane Goodall.”

Main idea: Research by Jane Goodall and others revealed information that changed society’s view of chimps
Supporting detail: Chimps live in complex social groups
Supporting detail: Chimps feel pain and sorrow
Supporting detail:

Which of the following is a supporting detail that completes the informal of this section?

A) Chimps live in the Gombe forest in Tanzania

B) Chimps studies were featured on television

C) Chimps remember numbers and enjoy puzzles

D) Chimps were studied by other researchers

Answers

The correct answer is C) Chimps remember numbers and enjoy puzzles

Explanation:

The purpose of an outline is to summarize the content of a text by stating the main idea and supporting details or information that explain this. In the case of the outline presented, the main idea is how the research by Jane Goodall changed the understanding of society about chips. Also, this outline presents two supporting details that show two findings that change the complexity of chips behavior; one is how chips form complex groups and how they have complex emotions.

According to this, the third supporting detail should be a characteristic of chips observed by Goodall that also changed the perception about them. Thus, the best option is "Chimps remember numbers and enjoy puzzles" because this is mentioned in the text "Later studies show that chips have number memory (they can remember numbers one through nine), and like humans enjoy doing puzzles for the fun of it" and also was one key finding that change the perception about chips.

Dear Editor,

Lately, our neighborhood has become extremely noisy. This has occurred because a mall is being constructed close to the residential quarters, and the construction activities have filled our streets with noise and smoke. For several hours each day, huge trucks line up the streets to deliver construction material. This has caused the streets to be overcrowded, resulting in traffic jams. The constant traffic jams and construction have not only caused noise pollution but have also increased air pollution. This situation is causing damage to the health of the people. It particularly affects the sleep quality and overall health of adults as well as kids.
The increase in noise and air pollution is a big threat to the health of the people. I would like to urge the city authorities to rethink their decision to build a mall in such a locality. Once the mall is ready, the traffic situation will only get worse. If city authorities do not cancel their plans, they should at least install noise-blocking boards around all houses to reduce the problem of noise pollution.

Sincerely,
Valencia Woods

Answers

In my opinion, I believe that many high school students in today's society would find Transcendentalist beliefs relevant for a variety of reasons, on of the most prevalent of those being the idea of nonconformity and standing up for your beliefs. In today's society, teenagers tend to feel as though they are treated unfairly, having too much expected of them yet still being treated like children who cannot think or act for themselves. Because of this, I believe that the Transcendentalist ideals would resonate greatly with the high school students in today's society. One of the nonconformist statements in "Self-Reliance," that I believe the high school students of today would find particularly inspiring is, "Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist. He who would gather immortal palms must not be hindered by the name of goodness, but must explore if it be goodness. Nothing is at last sacred but the integrity of your own mind."

Face oncoming is the correct answer because when walking along the side of the road and there is no sidewalk or footpath, we should walk on the one edge of the road opposite the direction in which the vehicle is traveling.

Otherwise, walking in the other direction of the road increases the risk of a head-on collision.

Therefore, If there isn't a sidewalk available where you're walking, walk on the opposite side of the road, facing oncoming traffic.

That means you should walk on the left side of the road, for example, if cars drive on the right side of the road, as they do in North America.

What do you mean by punctuation?

Punctuation is the use of white space, traditional signals, and specific typographical elements to help readers understand and interpret written material correctly, whether they are reading it silently or loudly.

"It is the practice, action, or system of adding points or other small marks into texts to facilitate understanding; segmentation of text into phrases, clauses, etc., by means of such marks," is another definition.

Punctuation in written English is essential for clarifying sentence meaning. For instance, the phrases "woman without her man is nothing" and "woman without her man is nothing," as well as "eats shoots and leaves" and "eats, shoots and leaves," have completely different meanings.

The earliest writing systems were either syllabic or logographic, such as Chinese and Mayan script, which do not always require punctuation, especially spacing.

This is because space does not always clearly show where one word ends and another begins because the full morpheme or word is often contained within a single symbol.
